Product Description

Product Description

All decent people live beyond their incomes nowadays, and those who aren't respectable live beyond other peoples'. Saki (H H Munro) stands alongside Anton Chekhov and O Henry as a master of the short story. His extraordinary stories are a mixture of humorous satire, irony and the macabre, in which the stupidities and hypocrisy of conventional society are viciously pilloried. This collection includes "Sredni Vastor" and "The Unrest Cure". 'We all know that Prime Ministers are wedded to the truth, but like other married couples they sometimes live apart'

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure genius and sheer unadulterated pleasure..., 27 Jun 2003
Saki never fails to delight. His mastery of the short story format is probably derived from his journalistic exploits in both Eastern Europe and the Palace of Westminster, but his immortal characters such as Reginald, Clovis, Vera, Sredni Vashtar, Herman, Groby Lington's monkey and a myriad of others are nothing less than creations of a unique and awesome talent.
At this price, you're a fool if you don't, as this is full to bursting with priceless moments.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book has every short story of Saki's ever published., 11 Mar 2003

If you've read his work before then you'll know what good value this book is. If you're new to Saki then try it; for the price you can't go wrong.
In his writing Saki sees the humour in the opulence of Edwardian society often contrasting this with the violence of nature. Although the settings of his stories are dated, his sharp wit and twisted humour are as fresh as ever.

This is one of those books that will have you laughing out loud on the bus!

5.0 out of 5 stars Treasure, 8 Jun 2009
I first read Saki because I am studying satire, and I was amazed at how witty he is - Esme and Shredni Vashtar are two of my favourite stories. Every short story in this book is about three pages long and they are massively addictive. This volume is good value as it gives you all of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sharper than Oscar
The short stories written by Saki (HH Munro) are superb; wry, darkly twisted but with the lightest, funniest touch. In my opinion his wit outshines Oscar Wilde's. Read more
