I read my first translated Russian books (Sholokovs' 'Quiet flows the Don' and 'The Don flows home to the sea,' whilst still at school a million years ago, and I was really taken by the sheer depth of description of Russian life.
Okay Dickens could build superb word pictures for me, but these two books really made the Steppe and the Don Cossacks come to life.
I've dipped in and out of War and Peace numerous times, but it failed to hook me to stay with the book all the way through (there's time yet!), and I've bought the short stories of Tolstoy for Kindle which offered a deeper level of description of Russian life.

I don't know what it is, but there is something about Russian writing that appeals immensely to me - the more descriptive the better... Gogol's Dead Souls is riveting...but it was chancing on an Interview with Ernest Hemingway that really helped me find someone who to me, is the absolute master of the short story.
The interviewer asked Hemingway who his favourite author was and he answered "Checkhov..... Favourite short story writer? Chekhov, Plays? Checkhov, Novels? Always Checkhov....Checkhov is the master).
So I bought both Volume 1 and Volume 2 for my Kindle on the basis of that and I have to say (halfway through Volume one) that Papa H was absolutely right.
His descriptive writing is superb, and if you are backing off from reading him thinking his points of view, language and 'take on life' will be old fashioned and stilted you will be pleasantly surprised.
His stories perfectly capture Russian life at the turn of the century, and his observations of human behaviour are of the highest order.
This volume is an absolute bargain at the price that is being asked.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful value - but? 14 Jun 2012

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really have right to complain when Kindle offers all these wonderful classics for little or nothing, but it is a shame that one can't choose which story to read. They are together in one lump and it doesn't seem possible to jump from one to another - unless I am being particularly stupid. One just has to plough through the stories one after the other. With a modern book it is possible to jump from chapter to chapter but that doesn't seem to work for these 'omnibus' editions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Constance Garnett 31 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
For anyone wondering whether this compromises on quality, as far as I can tell it's the Constance Garnett translation (certainly the same as those CG volumes available via Kindle). It's worth the price to avoid downloading the separate works, therefore.

I'm sure Chekhov doesn't need my endorsement, but he has it any way. Recommended to to help with my study of creative writing, he is a master of the short story.

We talk so often about women, I fancy, because we are dissatisfied. We take too ideal a view of women, and make demands out of all proportion with what reality can give us; we get something utterly different from what we want, and the result is dissatisfaction, shattered hopes, and inward suffering, "e;

To listen to them it would seem they had the future, fame, money, in their hands. And it never occurred to either of them that time was passing, that every day life was nearing its close, that they had lived at other people's expense a great deal and nothing yet was accomplished; that they were all bound by the inexorable law by which of a hundred promising beginners only two or three rise to any position and all the others draw blanks in the lottery, perish playing the part of flesh for the cannon. . . . They were gay and happy, and looked the future boldly in the face! "e;
