Product Description

'This collection of Dr. Searle's papers on schizophrenia is unquestionably the finest book on the subject yet published. Robert P. Knight, in his fine preface, notes that among Searle's attributes is a 'High degree of candor and personal humility.' This is an essential trait for anyone who, successful in treating schizophrenics, decides to write in order to help others make their way through the maze. The papers all feature a wealth of exactly appropriate clinical material.'- International Journal of Group Psychotherapy'These collected papers may be used as a textbook which delineates advanced techniques in the intensive psychotherapy of the schizophrenic patient. Experienced therapists will find that Searle's thoughtful discussions will deepen their understandings of their daily encounters with psychotic patients. Searle's research has fashioned new and useful forms for the data he has been able to uncover in his relationship with schizophrenic patients'.- Archives of General Psychiatry

About the Author

Harold F. Searles, M.D. (born 1918) is one of the pioneers of psychiatric medicine specialising in psychoanalytic treatments of schizophrenia. Arguably, Searles's work was largely ignored in the wider analytic community until the 1980s, when his radical views on the analyst's involvement through countertransference started to become more normative. Since then Jungians in particular have paid increasing attention to his work, linking his findings both to those of Jung and to the work of another maverick analyst, Robert Langs. Searles has also been associated with Donald W. Winnicott and Hans W. Loewald as psychoanalytic figures who all emphasised the importance of the part played in psychic development by the external environment.

Searles talks about his psycho-analytic work with psychotic patients at Chestnut Lodge, focusing on the transferential and counter-transferential elements of the work.Absolutely brilliant. As a young and new therapist I found his work extremely helpful in working with a whole range of clients, certainly less severely ill than his caseload, but nevertheless demanding. He also discusses a wide range of theoretical inputs, which he sets his clinical experience into.To understand the significance of very early development issues in the personality, I cannot recommend this book too highly.I am still awe struck by Searles use of his own feelings, thoughts and imagination to engage with and help highly disturbed individuals.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece 18 Dec 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
There are certain books every student of clinical psychology should read. This is one of them. This is Searles at his best--a classic. Not only does this book take you through the psychological maze of schizophrenia, it also guides you through the interpersonal dynamics of being a clinician working with seriously disturbed populations.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Work 15 April 2008
By Arden Beyer - Published on Amazon.com
Dr. Searles is brilliant in laying out thenceforth unrecognized patterns of intrapsychic and interpersonal dynamics experienced in working with the chronically schizophrenic population. When our present maelstrom of a love affair of tinkering with "biomedics" remedies itself--to a more ameliorative level--I think we might, perhaps, want to dash on off, purchase a copy of this book, and whatever you read, and re-read, will be of great benefit to you. His use of case illustrations blends with his presentation of theoretical views.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent book! 3 Mar 2011
By Lia Govers - Published on Amazon.com
After my own recovery of 'schizophrenia' with the help of several years of a good psychodynamic psychotherapy in North-Italy and after a personal extra trip of discovery in different kinds of books (first-person accounts of recovery and not; psychiatry books) while writing my own autobiographic story that is now also available on Amazon.com I asked my own psychiatrist for extra specific and enlightening lectures. Between those there was this one.
This book of Searles - even if I could not find myself back in all his descriptions - has [and will still be in future] been another great eye-opener for me.

A very honest account on transference and countertransference.
