Product Description

Allan Ahlberg's five poetry books, written over a period of twenty-five years – Please Mrs Butler, Heard it in the Playground, Friendly Matches, The Mighty Slide and The Mysteries of Zigomar – have delighted generations of children and received many accolades and prizes.

Allan has sifted through them and chosen a collection to delight and entrance a new generation of readers and their parents. Here are all the trials and tribulations of childhood, embracing school, quarrels, friendships, football and storytelling from a much-loved author and poet.

Charlotte Voake's black-and-white illustrations enchance the charm of this handsome and definitive collection.

Love his books from 'Peepo' to his mini readers. Love his rhymes. Love the illustrations. Love his depictions of school life from both the students' and the teachers' perspective. Hilarious. Found my son especially in the poem titled 'Excuses'.

I was thrilled to find this book.I have been a fan of Allan Ahlberg since his first books.

Children will enjoy the poems which relate to their experiences and if you have ever taught young children or if you remember your schooldays you will find poems with which you can identify.

There is a nice mix of subjects and poems vary in length.

This Collected Poemsbook is sheer delight. It takes me back to all the joys and some of the heartache of Osborne Road Junior School some 65 or so years ago. Boys and girls and teachers remembered as clearly as though it was yesterday. They are good memories. After taking an afternoon meeting someone said that she though that the poems were even better when read aloud. Allan - I should be on commision - this lady had bought herself a copy after an earlier reading and this purchase is on behalf of another convert. Pure joy. One for the desert island with my Bible.
