Book Description

This volume contains six plays by Ted Hughes which are particularly suitable for performance by children. Four of them were published originally under the title, The Coming of the Kings and Other Plays. Added to these are Orpheus and The Pig Organ, the former only ever published in America, the latter (which was written as a libretto) never before published.

Hughes enters the timeless world of folklore and fable and brings home a wonderful haul, managing to produce comedy, tragedy and magic from the same net, and then to move effortlessly between them. He makes stories from familiar elements (the Nativity, or Beauty and the Beast or a quest to save a sickening king), but approaches them from unexpected angles and sets them off in different directions. What characterizes the pieces is the energy Hughes generates not only in the unfolding action but in the drama of the language itself, which is as robustly up-to-date as it is lyrical.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bit hard going 28 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
I really like Ted Hughes's poems, I live near to a park called Stover here in Devon and they've got a poetry trail of his poems linked to different animals which are brilliant. On the strength of these I decided to purchase this book as I was looking for inspiration as I'm putting on a play at a drama group I run. However, even though I know to expect a different feel to a play then a poem, and Hughes does write the plays as an almost extended poem I found them hard going. I can't imagine children wanting to learn their lines as at times the plays feel laboured.
I won't be using them, but for my own personal interest I'm glad to have experienced another side of his writing.

3.0 out of 5 stars plays for children 9 Sep 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I am always looking for plays for a young and large cast and I like Ted Hughes writing but I was rather disappointed and felt that the writing was rather thin.

3.0 out of 5 stars Children's plays 21 April 2013
By Costa65
Format:Paperback
An entertaining array of plays for children. It is entirely dependant on their age, as the language is a little complicated. My junior group (youth theatre) are 7-11 and are just about grasping it.
