Product Description

Of all the poets writing today, Brian Patten is perhaps the most accessible and popular. Now his love poems, old and new, are collected together in his single volume.

Widely acknowledged as one of Europe’s foremost writers, Brian Patten’s love poems have earned him recognition far and wide. Truthful and tender, profoundly aware of the possibility of magic and the miraculous, these poems are beautiful, informed and, even at their darkest moments, filled with courage and hope.

Alongside old favourites, this edition will contain a selection of new and hitherto unpublished poems. A must for lovers and poetry lovers everywhere this February.

These poems reflect every aspect of being in love - the initial, unbearable tension (does s/he love me too? does s/he not?), the flowering happiness of those first weeks together, that madness maturing into a deeper love, and, of course, the misery of betrayal, of abandonment, of being the one who walks away too, and the guilt that tears one apart. Perhaps the most poignant poems are those that look back from a distance, with the benefit of emotional hindsight, better able to see the passage from apparent perfection to crushing loneliness. These are incredibly honest poems, but for all their personal inspiration, they have meaning for everyone in any stage of being in love, being out of love, being ecstatic or feeling quite broken. I recommend them very highly.

Admittedly I don't have this particular book yet but have 3 of his earlier works, including a book of his love poems. I absolutely love Brian Patten's work - his poetry is incredibly evocative and makes you feel as though you have been through what he is writing about, even if you haven't. His writing is lyrical, beautiful and so so worth reading!

"But without you none of these things" 28 Feb 2011
By William Timothy Lukeman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Love poetry is a difficult thing. Bad, mawkish, mushy sentimentalism is all too easy, however well-intended; but to write even one poem that says something truly fresh, new, piercing about love -- well, that's no easy feat!

Yet Brian Patten has been managing to do just that, over & over again, for more than 40 years now. From his youthful days of countercultural fame as a member of the Liverpool poetry scene, to his current place as one of England's finest poets, he's been capturing the poignant joys & sorrows of love in all its aspects with seeming effortlessness since the early 1960s.

- Sometimes it's a simple, almost blunt declarative statement that cuts to the quick:

When the face you swore never to forget
Can no longer be remembered,

- Sometimes it's a naked, almost blinding recognition:

Have you ever slept beside an ocean?
Well yes,
it is like this

The whole motion of landscapes, of oceans
is within her.
She is
the innocence of any flesh sleeping,
so vulnerable
no protection is needed

- Sometimes it's the juncture of bliss & dread:

As all is temporary and is changeable,
So in this bed my love you lie,
Temporary beyond imagining;
Trusting and certain, in present time you rest,
A world completed.

- And sometimes wild & lyrical:

Frightened once more by normal flesh
her body allowed
ordinary shapes to entertain her,
even buried deep in dreams --

for touched too soon in hurrying rooms,
the walls, forests they became,
and into myth she faded,
leaf-eyed; birds sang inside her brain.

By this time you'll know whether or not you want to read more. Patten has a distinct voice, one that's utterly entranced by beauty & possibility, but also possessed of enough cold clarity to see sorrow & loss opening like a doomed flower in the midst of joy. Most of all, he makes the reader look anew at love, seeing it as something wondrous & terrible, stripped of all lazy cultural frills & clichés. Most highly recommended!
