This excellent collection contains the nine extant complete Greek prose romances, together with fragments of another ten. Varying in tone from the sensationalism of Chaereas and Callirhoe, to the tender eroticism of Daphnis and Chloe, this opens up the field of Greek literature offering early examples of prose works that influence the Renaissance romance and, ultimately, the novel.
It would have been helpful to have had a slightly more coherent introduction both to the volume as a whole and to the individual works: since they are translated by different people, the introductions are also a little eclectic.
That aside, this is a much-needed volume, and is full of gems that entertain and sometime move.
