In all honesty, after all the intense hype and high expectations, I was left _somewhat_ disappointed by Michael Mann's latest movie - "Collateral". After his two impressive (yet out of character) dramas "The Insider" and "ALI", I saw Collateral as the chance for Mann to get back to do what he does best - making intense, beautiful action/crime movies.

Of course, those of us who have seen (and heard!) Collateral now know that to a large extent, the film hits all of the right notes. Furthermore, whilst not being anywhere near the "Heat 2" we were perhaps unwisely anticipating, the film is yet another solid, engrossing entry on Mann's resumé.

But this review isn't for the film - it's for the Soundtrack CD - and what a SUPERB release it is! Ever since the days of Miami Vice (and before) Mann has always been Executive Producer on the soundtrack releases associated with his TV and film projects. He clearly likes to get involved at a close level on this part of the film-making process - and judging by the excellent quality of this release from Hip-O Records, be thankful that he does!

From start to finish, this soundtrack just "rocks". The so-called "score" numbers from James Newton Howard ("Glengarry Glen Ross") are actually [on the whole] high-speed guitar based pieces which really set the pace for the rest of the album. I never thought I'd be singing the praises of someone like Oakenfold for example [!] the use of the special remix of "Ready Steady Go" of his track during the pivotal "night club shoot-out" scene is just _perfect_

It's nice to see Mann not be afraid use 2 composers again here (as he did on Last of the Mohicans) - the [too short] pieces by Antonia "City of God" Pinto are beautiful.

Check out the track list for the other songs included. I suspect that overall by favourite "non score" track would probably be #2 - "The Seed 2.0" from The Roots - excellent.

I could quite easily ramble on for 10 more paragraphs about this superb soundtrack ... but I'll finish by simply insisting that you go out and buy it! If you are still enjoying the marvellous HEAT soundtrack, just get ready for this one !!!

Outstanding 10 April 2009
Format:Audio CD
Is Los Angelas a multi-cultural city? Probably. This is a multi-cultural soundtrack- Latin rhythms of Guero Canelo's "Calexico," Destino de Abril's sultry "Green Car Motel"). Some key tracks are missing. Audioslave is absent ala the hypnotic scene where the wolf/ coyote crosses the street. However, it is the music that deserves as much praise as the film. Most scenes blend with the music in such way that it is very difficult to imagine one without the other. "Ready Steady, Go" is a perfect example of how a song can infuse the club scene with more style. Overall, the soundtrack contains an outstanding aural collection about the night atmosphere portrayed in the Michael Mann movie.

That mood is enhanced by the combination of Antonio Pinto and the genius composer James Newton Howard. My favourite track is song 2 by 'The Roots' and Groove Armada "Hands of Time" is astonishing. The standout "Spanish Key" from Miles Davis' Bitches Brew underscores the film's uneasy tensions.

I like the instrumental tracks by James Newton Howard - "Vincent Hops Train" and "Max Steals Briefcase" were great moments of intensity. I enjoy listening to Green Car Motel's "Destino de Abril" ; I love the mixture of rock and Spanish guitar which enlivened Max's meeting with Felix. All in all it's one of the few soundtracks that has everything in it. A lot of variety, intensity, and drama to go with it. Another brilliant Michael Mann ost. Res ipsa loquitur.

This soundtrack is loyal to the movie. It works well in the movie and makes you want to buy the soundtrack. However, when listened to outside the movie, it is just a series of diverse tracks. One will mostly skip tracks and listen to only a pair of them in length.
