From Amazon.co.uk

Didn't the Arnold Schwarzenegger tough-guy role become outdated way back in the mid-90s? Aren't audiences tired of all this stuff by now? Collateral Damage would have you believe not. Within minutes we see the Austrian Oak in fire-fighter's uniform running to the rescue in cheesy slo-mo. Arnie's two-dimensional character seems a little archaic and so does the revenge-for-the-death-of-his-wife-and-child plot. Someone apparently thought that applying the politics of terrorism addressed in Proof of Life to the Arnie shootout genre was a good idea. Yet here even the Colombian bad guys' motivations seem muddled and hastily obscured under bullet-quick exposition. It's also no good trying to show the muscle man in a different light: so what if he mopes about with a tear in his eye for 20 minutes, we all know he's going to take the law into his hands soon enough. This he does with familiar gusto, of course. Fights and explosions ensue. Johns Leguizamo and Turturro provide comical cameos but add nothing more. The film's release was delayed so as not to offend anyone in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Who were they kidding? No-one ever took an Arnie movie seriously, least of all this one.

On the DVD: Collateral Damage on disc has a couple of documentaries that try to embellish the idea of Schwarzenegger's new on-screen persona, but neither succeed. The additional scenes deserved to be excised. The commentary from director Andrew Davis certainly hints at greater aspirations, but makes no apology for the lack of pay-off. There's supposed to be a DVD-ROM-only commentary from Schwarzenegger, too, but this reviewer couldn't find it anywhere. --Paul Tonks

4.0 out of 5 stars Good action, relevant plot and surprising ending 16 Mar 2003
Format:DVD
I have mostly enjoyed Arnold's movies, with some exceptions (such as Commando, Twins and the most terrible one where he - oh horror! - gives birth to a child).

To me at least it seems that Collateral Damage is both related with and an opposite of Commando; related because both movies have a revenge plot. Opposite because whilst the latter was characterised by amazingly bad acting and a predictable ending, the former both displays a convincing performance by Arnold and delivers a most surprising - if not shocking - finish.

The plot: I will not reveal too much here in case the reader is yet to watch this move, but the story begins with Arnold losing his family in a bomb blast set off by a terrorist. We witness Arnold's agony, the search for revenge, the captivity in a South American jungle, the friendship with the terrorist's family - and - the incredibly shocking ending.

I know that another review here says that the terrorist is portrayed in a way too sympathetic light, which makes it impossible to despise him as much as we despised the bad guy in Commando. I disagree. And very much so: One quality of Collateral Damage is that we get the impression that there is a human side to the terrorist; we start to understand/think that even his family opposes his evil plans and what he has become; we start assuming that a relationship is developing between Arnold and the terrorist's wife.

In other words, one gets an impression that the plot is taking a particular direction and that the ending will become logical and predictable. But not so! The movie takes us to the conclusion that you can trust no-one, and that nothing should be taken for what it is. And indeed, that fanaticism can override even natural human relations. In my opinion, that is no bad plot at all.

Let me put it like this: If you are looking for something with lots of killing and a banale plot (such as Commando) or explosive sci-fi (such as Total Recall and Terminator II), then Collateral Damage may be an unsuitable choice. But if you want to watch a solid performance by Arnold, an unusual plot and at the same time great action, then Collateral Damage may be what you are looking for.

I may be accused by some of entering deep waters now, but to some extent I would compare parts of the plot in Collateral Damage with the one present in the fantastic Arlington Road. Watch Collateral Damage and you will understand why.

Best regards

2.0 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment From Arnie 14 Feb 2013
Format:DVD
With a few cringeworthy moments aside, most of Schwarzeneggers work up to Collateral Damage, had been decent stuff in the action genre. Some of it fantastic. Collateral Damage bears no resemblance to any Arnie movie I've ever seen. And it's in a bad way, a very bad way.

If Arnie doesn't shine, then usually the story does, or there are a bunch of bad guys played by good actors that gel it all together- here we have none of that.

Collateral Damage is just a flat film, end of. Sure the climax tries to beef itself out of trouble- but that's no excuse for the other 100 mins before it.

I've never felt so bored when watching an Arnie film. Theres not even that much action, and Arnie looks very tired in this film. Not just him though, so does everyone else.

I cannot see why anyone can defend such a film and give it good marks. And this is coming from a big Arnie fan. As an example look at how Arnie's character deals with the death of his wife and son? He doesn't deal with it at all. We are given no human time with Arnie to grieve. Missed opportunity.

When you watch this you have a strong desire to turn it off and stick on Total Recall, True Lies- even Eraser is much better than this.

The only positive is you think it can't get any worse for Arnie- It kind of did agreeing to do the pathetic Terminator 3 after this one- and then he switched careers. Made a good choice me thinks.

By Trevor Willsmer HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Collateral Damage threatens to become a good film on several occasions but never quite makes it. Partially it's due to the post 9/11 re-editing that played down the innocent civilian casualties in Arnie's quest for vengeance on Colombia terrorists, but more because it seems that the script was probably rewritten a few too many times to accommodate the Austrian Oak. Some swipes at the duplicity and counterproductive nature of American intervention in South America survive as the war hits home, but the film is ultimately content to turn its revolutionaries into cardboard fanatics (not to mention throwing in a ridiculous scene with a snake in case we don't get the point) and go for the big bangs. Still one of its star's better pictures as his career wound down before he went into politics, though.

The DVD includes some decent but not overly exciting extras: audio commentary by director Andrew Davis, 6 deleted scenes, a couple of featurettes and the trailer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Didn't know whether to laugh or love it!
Okay, so it's not one of Arnie's best films- he looks older and as a USA family man, he doesn't exactly cut the mustard, but nonetheless, this was a pretty decent thriller. Read more
