Product Description

Product Description

One of many exhilarating artistic developments that took place during the early twentieth century, the fine art medium of collage emerged from the cubist gluing and pasting explorations of Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. As a result of its experimental genesis, collage has continued to serve not only as a primary form of expression for many prominent artists, but as a principal means of evaluating and developing new creative strategies.
Conceived and written by renowned artist, author, and teacher Gerald Brommer, "Collage Techniques" first presents the medium within the context of a wide variety of materials, including washi (oriental and rice papers) and watermedia; stained, prepared, and found papers; photographs; and fabrics and fibers. Each category of material is examined through a step-by-step demonstration and works by artists who approach collage in original and refreshing ways. The latest trends in technologically enhanced collage, including such high-tech applications as multiple photocopying and digital scanning, are also discussed. The author then explores how the elements and principles of design are used in collage, and how they in turn are employed in all the major genre, including still life, landscape, the human figure, abstraction, and nonobjective imagery.
Beautifully illustrated with the work of more than eighty noted artists, including Edward Betts, Jae Carmichael, Margo Hoff, Katherine Chang Liu, and Fred Otnes, "Collage Techniques" is an essential reference for all artists and illustrators, regardless of their creative focus or choice of medium.

First Sentence
The aesthetic act of pasting objects and papers to a surface has been practiced in various folk arts for centuries, including twelfth-century Japanese text-collages decorated with paper foils, African tribal emblems, fifteenth-century Persian and Turkish cut paper designs, German weather charms and lace valentine greetings, as well as eighteenth-century butterfly-wing collages. Read the first page

Where's my review? 23 Feb 2005
By lynsey adams VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
I have already written a glowing review of this inspirational book, which I have owned and used for ten years. I don't know what has happened to the review, but I repeat here that this is the best book I have seen for the serious collage artist, bar none. My copy is so well used and battered that I am considering buying a new one - and tearing the other one up for collage!

Inspirational... 4 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
I looked at a lot of collage books before settling on this one. It covers all the technique stuff, together with several 'demonstrations' but I really liked the artists work included in the books - I found these inspirational. Although I have always believed that there are no rules in collage, this book demonstrates that there are areas to be considered and discusses these well. My only regret was that being a US book, it lists only one paper manufacturer in the UK and only shows US artists (I think). I have had the book two weeks and it is already well thumbed!

Good enough 21 July 2011
Format:Paperback
Some sections are a bit predictable and prescriptive but the book does cover the subject pretty comprehensively. I have liked other books on the subject better.
