Collage fun 30 July 2008
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a bright colourful inspiring book with lots of clearly explained techniques. The author likes to use photograph faces in her collages but even if an artist chooses not to use that idea they can still benefit from the techniques and incorporate their own style. Lots of colourful photographs and the examples are't just restricted to just paper, cigar boxes, altered books and canvas are also used in some of the examples.

It is an American book so the glue that is advised is probably not available in the UK but I'm sure it would be possible to get something similar.

Not so Unexpected 16 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback
I was looking for a book for both my daughter and myself to use as inspiration for creating collages, art journals, altered artwork etc, and went for Claudine Hellmuth because I have seen her in action and find her engaging. Whilst this book contains some interesting and useful techniques - I have already used a couple of them and was very pleased with the results - I would have liked to see more artists' work. Claudine H has a very distinctive style which doesn't really lend itself to 125 pages of photographs and becomes a little bland after a while. More techniques, more projects and more contributors would improve this book.

Great source of background techniques! 21 Sep 2005
By K. Solheim - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Stuck staring at a blank page? If you're looking for a jump-start for your ATCs, collage, or altered book, Claudine's two books are terrific resources. I personally use several of her techniques in my mixed media collage and ATCs. Sometimes it's just a great way to "warm up" my muse when I'm starting a session of art making. Claudine also writes for Cloth, Paper, Scissors and you'll see her pieces in many other books. She has a distinctive style. Highly recommended.

definitely beyond my expectations 12 Aug 2005
By S. Schoenfeldt - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I loved Claudine Hellmuth's first book so I pre-ordered this one, even tho I'm not that crazy about her Poppets. And I was not disapointed. Techniques, techniques, techniques. The one on monoprinting from xerox copies alone was worth the price.

I love how she explains what she did while encouraging the reader to experiment and not duplicate her work. She even includes a little how-to on finding your own style which will be beneficial to so many. This way we can learn from her yet each have our own unique style.

Both her books are great and I learned a lot from them even tho I've been doing mixed-media collage for quite awhile.

Mixed Media Love! 11 Aug 2005
By Amber Gibbs - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Beyond the Unexpected avoids the usual pitfalls of craft books. Instead of showing a project and how to recreate it inch for inch - Claudine Hellmuth shows us the techniques and how to combine these in your own unique mixed media collages. I'm excited to try her home printing techniques and love the contact paper technique! A very well put together book with great advice!
