Product Description

Product Description

Leading artist Mike Bernard reveals every aspect of working with collage, paint and other mixed-media approaches, from the initial inspiration for a painting through to design, colour, surface qualities and finishing touches. In particular the book includes detailed information and advice on useful collage techniques, and demonstrates how, by starting with paper collage and then working freely with paint and other materials, you can develop exciting and original results in interpreting whatever subject matter appeals to you. The book includes numerous illustrations, again covering every step of the working process, as well as a wide selection of subject matter -- from urban scenes to winter landscapes -- from around the world. There are step-by-step demonstrations of some of the key techniques as well as location sketches, watercolour studies and striking finished paintings. Mike Bernard's work includes exciting textures, strong colour and the effects of light, and he combines these qualities into original semi-abstract images of landscapes, seascapes, street scenes, still life and figure compositions. His techniques, particularly paper collage, are important ones for all artists looking to expand their repertoire.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer exhuberance, 5 Nov 2010

This review is from: Collage, Colour and Texture in Painting (Hardcover)
I haven't had much time to read this but my first reaction was just how wonderful it is to have a book that DOESN'T devote the first chunk to advice about materials. It is straight in on a creative level. For instance collage materials come in on page 60, acrylic inks on page 76...advice where and when you need it.

Second imnpression was of being assailed by colour and energy on every page. Fascinating dynamic compositions using many materials and media, and a unique style. Every page is informative rather than being just a narrative of the picture. You get a great deal of wisdom from Bernard and Capon, everything from interpretation and composition through to further development. This book is so packed with interest that it is impossible to review all it offers. If you like this style, you cannot have a better book to guide you through the techniques and feed your enthusiasm.

This review is from: Collage, Colour and Texture in Painting (Hardcover)
This book covers all the essential elements of how to.....as well as offering superb photos of both paintings and sketches. The text is accessible and gives a real insight into both technique and inspiration. A high quality production which I am sure both my students and I will refer to again and again ....highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mike Bernard's Painting, 23 Aug 2010

I've only recently become aware of Mike Bernard's work and really like his style. I'm not sure I'm that bothered with the collage in his work but I do like the composition, colour, style and subject matter of his finished paintings. I've not seen any of his work 'face to face' so to speak, and may appreciate the collage/textural input more if I did, but so far I've only seen his work via a catalogue and now in this book.....and like what I see. The book is a great collection of his images and an excellent showpiece for his style and I recommend it to anyone. (I must admit it was the cover picture that originally caught my eye whilst browsing Amazon, as I have been struggling to do a watercolour at my art class of that exact location shot, having had a holiday at the 'Cinque Terra' in Italy last year. Mike's style perfectly catches the 'shabby chic' of this area, and this village of Riomaggiore. His other images of 'shabby' (textural!) buildings, ports , harbours and street scenes in the book are very effective and equally successful).
