Amazon.co.uk Review

There are rally games and there are rally games and then there's Colin McRae Rally 3 on the Xbox. It's difficult to know where to start the review on the third instalment of this hugely successful franchise--the eye-wateringly sharp graphics might do, the easy-to-get-to-grips-with gameplay would be a winner or the understated but superbly well-done commentary and sound would also do the job. In the end, it's probably easier to start with "just buy it".

As you'd expect from a top-flight rally sim, everything about the vehicles can be customised and tinkering under the bonnet between stages really produces a difference. If you're a really bad driver you can also see the difference, as tearing the bonnet, side panels or windows out mid-stage reveals an astonishing level of detail within the car. Engine parts move, suspension arms judder and Mr McRae himself bounces around the car's cockpit in full 3-D--the level of detail is amazing.

With a variety of gameplay modes ranging from races over individual stages to a simulated three-season tour of duty as McRae himself, there's plenty of bang for your buck here--and believe us, by the time you've cannoned off the scenery for the umpteenth time you'll know what bangs are all about.

Thankfully, Codemasters have resisted the temptation to fill Colin McRae 3 with discordant music tracks, relegating the score to intro and menu screens and leaving the in-game sound to codriver commentary and a multitude of engine sounds--a pleasant change in an age where licensed soundtracks are king. Perhaps the strongest element of CM3, though, is in the gameplay. The car-handling is spot on and in wild weather (snow, rain, fog and more) guiding a speeding Ford Focus around sharp bends is a real art.

The Xbox has a wide range of good games and a handful of true AAA titles; Colin McRae 3 falls into the latter category as a real must-have. Chris Russell

Product Description

In Colin McRae Rally 3 players take on the role of McRae himself at the beginning of a three-year contract to win a series of championships for the Ford Rallye Sport team. The heart of the game is its Championship mode, where the pressure is on in rallies over eight global locations. Between the adrenaline-rushing rally driving, the game is seamlessly blended with stage start, stage checkpoint, end stage and service area sequences. Each rally begins with the 2002 Ford Focus RS in the service area where the team's engineers perform the set-up requirements, adjusting the suspension, engine, chassis and other key parts to practically optimum settings. However, should you want to make an inspection of their work there's an opportunity to check the configuration and make manual adjustments. As always, unpredictable weather conditions can make all the difference when every second counts, and tarmac, gravel, dirt and rain-soaked terrain add yet more edge.

4.0 out of 5 stars Colin McRae Rally 3 - watch your axle, 7 Nov 2002
By
Mr. S. M. Murphy (Hengoed, Mid Glam United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Colin McRae Rally 3 (Xbox) (Video Game)
For those of us who payed CMR 2 on the PS1 the first thing that strikes you with the latest version is the visuals. The car is far more detailed than before the increase in polygon count from some 800 to 14,000 sees to this. Mud accumulates gradually on the outside of the car (snow equally so) as seen from the one outside camera view. The in car view especially is quite amazing and the weather effects particularly from this position quite astounding. Rain realistically spots on the windscreen while the wipers smear it away to either side.

The tracks themselve no longer make you feel as if your travelling down a corridor - make a mistake in this game and you can easily be out of contention trying to slither back up a banking or caught in a rut on the side of a road. Trackside detail is excellent and almost photorealistic when viewed from the in car camera) although it has to be said that bystanders still retain the cardboard cut out textures of earlier versions.

It is important aswel to take heed of the instructions of your co driver(which are numerous and well realised) as there are multiple junctions and turn offs in this game - presume too much and you will again be loosing valuable seconds three point turning out of a slip road.

The car handling itself (on the x box version)is a little sensitive for my liking but this is easily accomodated by turning the sensitivity down in the setup options which makes for a smoother ride - especially noticeable on the tarmac sections where a slight tremor on the controller sends you snaking uncontollably down the road.

The championship mode which is the main section of the game does not allow you to restart a race if you get it wrong the first time - you have to continue and improve your time over the following stages, so perserverence is required which ultimately lends an element of longevity to the game.

For the engineers out there there are plenty of options for you to fine tune your motor as completing stages succesfully brings a multitude of advanced spare parts for your car but if like me all you want to do is get on the starting line and burn rubber Colin McRae 3 is just the game for you - but be warned - this is not a game that you can set out to bounce off walls at full throttle and hope to end up pointing in the right direction at the end of it, just to save a second or two - damage is brilliantly realised in Colins (your)car. If you hit a rock or spin out of control particularly badly you can not only smash a windscreen or loose your bumper but even destroy an axle or burst a tyre which will see you limping home in sparks and smoke or even forced to retire from a stage altogether.

Well there it is- Colin McRae rally 3 is a big step up from its previous incarnations and if its controlled driving aggression your after (with plenty of eye candy thrown in) this may well be your game.

Steve Murphy

5.0 out of 5 stars amazingly playable, but missing a few things..., 22 Dec 2002
This review is from: Colin McRae Rally 3 (Xbox) (Video Game)
playability/gameplay:
well, this game automatically gets 5 stars for playability and gameplay. Quite simply, it has the best physics around (and damn right, the colin mcrae team worked with ford engineering team!).
graphics:
The car details, amazing... the landscapes (for the majority of countries), very detailed (except sweden!)...
sound:
decent engine sound, and it needs to be so you know when to change gear, etc.

all in all... this game has some stunning scenery, good car "mechanics" and amazing playability. what it misses, however, are more tracks, better multiplayer features, more details to car damage/what you can fix/car setup (like colin mcrae 2)... and basically a more stable package.

having said all this.. youll find once you get stuck into a game like this, youll be trying to finish the season non-stop during a spare 4 hour period!. its very addictive, and really takes you into the driving seat because concentration levels need to be 90%+ in order for very fast times. and youll soon learn how to dodge lamp-posts and 80 degree cliffs at 90 mph!... a lot of fun. buy it purely for the gameplay (when your driving at top speed round bend after bend, you really dont have time to look at the scenerey/graphics, but you will when you see some of the stunning elements they have added in!).

driving fans... buy this one!

p.s once youve completed the game, buy an addon steering wheel for the xbox, it will pretty much give you a new game, with "different" gameplay.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great game, 11 Nov 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Colin McRae Rally 3 (Xbox) (Video Game)
1. Graphics = Very impressive, from the car right through to the great rain effects on the front screen on the interior view

2. Tracks = Good variety in both types of courses offered and obviously the variety of weather conditions you would expect

3. Gameplay = Great, even though you are racing alone, either trying to beat the car in fronts time or setting the fastest time if you are the first car keeps you playing and playing and playing. Also worth mentioning teh co-driver instructions which are very good, something that sometime goes to pot in games.

4. Car Dynamics = the corners feel very realistic both in the skiding and sliding and also the way the brakes feel as you drive.

5. Multiplayer = Great, splkit sceen horizontally and even though the screen is smaller there is no real loss of gameplay, though you do lose teh co-driver commands as you might expect. Also if you are competiung against each other for a whole rally then you will have to add your times up manually, a minor hinderance
