Colin Davis and the LSO giving us the complete Sibelius symphonies at this price? A no-brainer.

Should you need my personal reasons for this comment, read on......

Symphony No. 1. My main reason for buying this set. Davis captures the beauty of this early symphony, whilst showing us the grandeur that is to come in later works. The best performance of this symphony I have heard.

Symphony No 2. Stiff competition here. I still prefer - just - Jarvi with the Gothenberg SO, but Davis runs them close. You won't be disappointed.

Symphony No. 3. Another superb version. Nothing more to add.

Symphony No. 4. OK, for me, Vanska and the Lahti SO win here, but again the Davis/LSO version will not disappoint.

Symphony No 5. I still think that this Davis/LSO combination is the best on disc. As with No. 1, a key reason for buying this set, not least because my vinyl version is worn out.

Symphony No. 6. I know it is not fashionable, but I still have a soft spot for the early Beecham/RPO version. When the sound quality of the older version gets too off-putting, I turn to Davis.

Symphony No. 7. As in some of the earlier symphonies, Vanska and the Lahti SO offer stiff competition, and as before Davis and the LSO step up to the plate.

I have only covered the symphonies here, as I think they will be the main reason for considering this set.but they only take up half of the seven discs. The remainder is several of the tone poems, other orchestral works and "Kullervo"; all of which get a very satisfying treatment.

If you are looking for the complete set of the Sibelius symphonies, this must be a strong contender, to be considered seriously with Davis' cycle with the Boston SO, and the Vanska/Lahti SO set. Or if, like me, you are Sibelius nut, why not get all three?

One of the finest sets of the Sibelius symphonies - Davis directs beautifully crafted performances that seem to get to the heart of the composer's intentions. The set includes most of the major tone poems in very good recordings - the Lemminkäinen Suite (Four Legends from the Kalevala), Op. 22, is excellent.

Very good. I think I prefer the old Barbirolli that I had on vinyl but good quality recording. I am not too happy with the way they are set out on the CDs but it is not a problem.

I enjoyed the music but I was disappointed that there was no accompanying booklet giving background notes on the various works.

I await your comments.

Good, but not the Best 27 Aug. 2013
By J. R. Trtek - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Colin Davis' traversal of the the Sibelius symphonies has always been one of my two favorite cycles -- however, it's the one first one he did, with the Boston Symphony, that I'm referring to. These performances with the London Symphony, the second Sibelius set he recorded, as a whole just don't rise to the level of the first, which are also available in a budget set from Decca. One's response to a musical performance is inherently going to be subjective, and no doubt many will disagree with me, but I will stick with Davis and the Boston Symphony over Davis with the London Symphony -- either in these RCA renditions or the later set he did for the LSO's own label. There's a smoothness and suaveness in the Boston recordings that seems to me lacking in the London ones. (And if I want more roughly-hewn Sibelius, I'll turn to Segerstam's set with the Helsinki Philharmonic on Ondine.) Davis' passing is to be greatly regretted, and his career something to be cherished. His Sibelius moments, however, are in my layman's estimation best represented by the Boston cycle, not this one.

Good collection of Sibelius' major works 2 April 2013
By Tero - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This collection has more than the Davis Boston box. However, most people think that one is his best, the Boston Decca box.

But to the RCA box: I like his symphonies 1-3 and 5-7. The Lemminkäinen suite is fine, very competitive with the best versions out there.. If you want a Davis Kullervo, get the LSO live with Monica Groop as Kullervo's sister. It comes in a symphony box set.

Overall a very good bargain. Some tone poems and longer suites are hard to find by Davis except in this reissue. I liked them all for a good day of listening, Tapiola included. Only the Karelia Suite was something I pretty much skip every time.

A Note on Passing 25 April 2013
By Grady Harp - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The music world seems to be overlooking the passing Sir Colin Davis so perhaps a bit of biography is needed to remind audiences of the magnitude of his presence in the world of classical music. Sir Colin Davis (1927-2013) was a noted British conductor. He first found wide acclaim when he stood in for an ill Otto Klemperer in a performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera, `Don Giovanni,' at the Royal Festival Hall in 1959. A year later, he stood in for Thomas Beecham in similar circumstances in Mozart's `The Magic Flute' at Glyndebourne. In the 1960s he worked at Sadler's Wells Opera, the London Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. In 1971 he succeeded Georg Solti as principal conductor at the Royal Opera House, where he had given occasional performances before, remaining there until 1986. He became noted for championing the operas of Michael Tippett, giving the premieres of his works `The Knot Garden' (1970), `The Ice Break' (1977) and `The Mask of Time' (1984). In 1977 he became the first English conductor to appear at the Bayreuth Festival where he conducted `Tannhäuser'. Davis was knighted in 1980. He subsequently worked at the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Symphony Orchestra before being appointed principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra in 1995. He died aged 85 on 14th April 2013.

In this set of 7 CDs we are gifted with his interpretations of the works of Jean Sibelius. All seven symphonies are presented with Sir Colin Davis conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. He has a keen ear for the sweep of these difficult symphonies whose architecture eludes many well-schooled conductors. But as an added bonus the following tone poems and choral works are added:

Kullervo, Op. 7 with Hillevi Martinpelto (soprano), Karl-Magnus Fredriksson (baritone) and the London Symphony Chorus
En Saga Op. 9
Rakastava, Op. 14
Lemminkäinen Suite, Op. 22
Pohjola's Daughter, Op. 49
The Bard, Op. 64
Karelia Suite, Op. 11
The Oceanides, Op. 73
Finlandia, Op. 26
Valse Triste, Op. 44 No. 1
Tapiola, Op. 112
Night Ride and Sunrise, Op. 55

This is a full survey of Sibelius' music and while not every performance here works perfectly, the sense of Sibelius' spacious drama and influence by the tundra and folklore of his country is ever present. This is a fine bargain now, but likely will increase in price with the demise of Davis. Grady Harp, April 13
