Product Description

Product Description

Colin Chapman was one of the greatest ever creative forces in the automotive world but he left behind a mixed legacy. Was he an unparalleled innovator who advanced the state of the art of sports and racing cars? Or was he an uninhibited exploiter of the uncredited ideas of others? In death as well as life Colin Chapman excites fevered debate about his achievements and methods. Now Karl Ludvigsen gets to grips with the legend, digging deep beneath the skin of Chapman and his cars to explore and expose the motivations that drove this mercurial genius.

About the Author

At last 14 Sep 2010
Format:Hardcover
At last a book that captures Chapman as an engineer. Karl Ludvigsen has done what no one else had managed to, and portrayed him as he was: genius, faults and all. I was lucky enough to have worked closely with Chapman for 9 years, and reading this book brought back so many wonderful memories of those years.

Research Team 13 Sep 2010
Format:Hardcover
This book is a readable and detailed account of the achievements and failures of the working life of Colin Chapman. The methodology of chapter organisation is particularly friendly as it allows reading them out of sequence if, for example, you are more interested in aerodynamics or personalities rather than transmissions or engines. I have to add that I am the "team of researchers/helpers" speculated by Mr Millar in his review of 17 August. Karl Ludvigsen is supremely hard working and he himself uses the resources he has collected over many years. My less than 200 hours a year, mostly spent keeping documents in an accessible order, have minimal influence on the quality or volume of his output.

Needs an Editor 17 Aug 2010
Format:Hardcover
This book deals with Colin Chapman's contributions to automotive technology by way of a series of themed chapters - concepts, engines, transmissions, suspensions, structures, aerodynamics etc. The book is very comprehensive as you'd expect from Karl Ludvigsen and initially I was very impressed. But as the book wore on (and it is a big book)I felt that the same ground was being covered again and again, albeit with a slightly different focus each time around. I don't know how Karl writes so many big books but I suspect that he has a team of researchers/helpers on hand to get all the material marshalled together. I felt that the book could have been improved with a bit of editing.
