Product Description

Product Description

The Colgate Pro-Clinical A1500 uses smart sensors that automatically adjust to clean both teeth & gums. Thanks to its distinct smart sensors, the brush automatically adjusts to engage different speeds and cleaning actions based on the position you hold it in your mouth, resulting in a superior* clean for teeth & gums. The British Dental Health Foundation recommends brushing in small, circular movements at a 45 degree angle at the gumline for optimal plaque removal. When held at this recommended angle, the Colgate Pro-Clinical A1500 automatically lights up to show you, so you can feel confident you are removing plaque in the areas of your mouth most susceptible to gum disease. The angled and lightweight handle is part of the intelligent design. These smart ergonomics allow easy movement of the brush around your mouth which is especially beneficial for those with poor manual dexterity. The Colgate Pro-Clinical range has been developed in partnership with Omron, worldwide leaders in high-tech smart sensor robotics, renowned for developing life-saving health equipment such as ECG machines, body composition scales, and blood glucose monitors.

I have always wondered just how amazing one of these crazily expensive toothbrushes must feel to use. I mean, at the best part of £200 (originally anyway) that must be an amazing experience!

So I jumped at the chance to try out one of these as I would never spend half that on a toothbrush otherwise.

I have always used manual toothbrushes, only dabbling with these electric gizmos after my dentist has repeatedly told me they do a better job. The trouble is I've never really been able to feel the difference in the results between using either.
This brush comes in a very large luxuriant box with three (long lasting) heads, a contactless charger, a case and a manual (only about 8 pages are in English). The brush itself is quite long, but slender and well balanced.

It says it requires a 16hr charge for the first go but mine was partially charged at least from the box.
The charger is a contactless one so you just sit the base loosely in it to stand the brush up and a red light will appear (although it took a while the first time) to show it's charging.

There are two modes, automatic and manual. The booklet recommends using automatic for two weeks so the sensors can learn your brushing technique and adjust accordingly.

Turning it on for the first time is a mildly alarming experience, this thing is more powerful than its cheaper cousins. It sounds rather like a dentist's drill in fact, which would explain the slight sense of unease when I first used it!

I have been using it on the automatic setting so far. Every 30 seconds it pauses very briefly to tell you to move to a different area.

I’ve not thought of getting an electric toothbrush before, I guess that’s because a) I’m too tight b) I never really saw the need.

My current manual brush would cost around £1 - £2 whatever branded brush the supermarket had on offer, quite often Colgate and nearly always Colgate toothpaste. After 34ish years of brushing in this manor I found that I tend to brush too hard which even with a firm headed brush quickly wore out the bristles. From a dentists point of view I've more recently been told that I need to floss more as my brushing action wasn’t adequate.

So onto the ‘Colgate ProClinical A1500’, housed in a bright red box (that now houses part of my sons toy car collection) it comes with 3 brush heads, travel case (very useful for nights away), charger, stand and the toothbrush itself. Note you will need a 3 pin plug adaptor for use with the charger. On the side of the box there is some basic and informative information about the brush and how to use it. One thing that stood out to me on the side of the box was ’30 DAY CHALLENGE – Satisfaction Guaranteed (details inside)’, knowing that I had my 6 monthly dental check-up due at the end of July I thought I would see if using this brush alone and not flossing would meet with the dentists approval.

So in use, which is more than simple with a basic on/off button, mode selector button (I favoured the middle setting Optimum) and a two minute timer so you don’t over brush I used it twice a day for just short of 30 days. Firstly I didn’t find I needed to brush as hard and the bristles are still in near perfect condition now, it did leave my teeth feeling really clean and my mouth fresh.

This is my second Omron - which is an anagram of `moron', so, they could have got a better name. Still, I digress; this is a fatter, faster model being the catchy named A1500 (which sounds like a road in Orkney or somewhere). This model has a much more ergonomically shaped handle and the on/off switch is higher up which prevents accidental turning off, which plagued my earlier model.

It comes with three heads, one of which is a `sensitive' type. It also has a base charger unit which is smaller than the earlier model and a carry case so you can take it away with you without worrying if it will turn itself on in your suitcase (as happened with me and the old one once).

To start your path to molar heaven you need to charge the Omron for 16 hours. It also recommends charging for the same period once a week and it plugs into your shaver socket - unless you don't have one - in which case you will need an adaptor (not supplied). The brushes just click into place and from past experience you should get a good eight to ten weeks use out of each head.

It has lights that come on to say it is charging, it has three speeds and three brush actions. It also has auto stop if you hold it in place for too long. It also recommends that you moisten the brush, then add your choice of toothpaste and then insert in your mouth before turning it on. This will prevent unsightly toothpaste splatter as it really does start vibrating quite a lot once engaged. So all in all a very nice and effective brush that gets you quite near that `dentist clean' feeling and it has ironed out a few of the problems of the earlier model - recommended.
