Book Description

1 Oct 2013
Her companions were all the great French writers, artists, actors and intellectuals and her life is told against a backdrop and atmosphere of great creativity and style, liberation and rebellion. Colette both wrote about love and lived love to the fullest in the most independent, and often outrageous sense - numerous lovers, several marriages, a lesbian affair, and an affair with her seventeen year old stepson. Colette's France reveals too her deep and personal love of France and the natural world. This book is an illustrated biography of French writer, Colette, told through the locations in France where she lived, worked and loved. Her lively life story moves along through her many different relationships and homes - from a childhood in Burgundy, to Paris of the Belle Epoque, Britanny to Provence and more. Beautiful photographs and illustrations bring her story alive and evoke the style and fashion of the times.

Review

"A legendary French writer, radical, and provocateur, Colette epitomized Belle Epoque Paris. Her beauty and brilliance are captured strikingly in this artful, sensual biography." "ForeWord Reviews""More than a symbol, though, Colette, who famously had all kinds of affairs, was a writer of unflinching portraits of love, or rather, as Gilmour suggests in this illustrated biography, the impossibility thereof." " Vogue.com"

5.0 out of 5 stars Colette's France 3 Mar 2014

This is one of the most beautiful books I have ever bought. When someone is passionate about their subject it shows and in this case Jane Gilmour has written an insightful account of Colette's life with a delightfully delicate touch. The illustrations and photographs are little works of art in themselves. A jewel of a book. Highly recommended as a special treat for lovers of Colette and France.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting life 2 Jan 2014

Colette's France: Her lives, her loves is a fascinating read. Colette's life certainly was never boring although it was difficult at times to accept the sequence of events. She was not a very likeable person but very self centred in the pursuit of satisfying her own desires at the cost of other people's welfare and feelings. I feel this book would mainly appeal to Francophiles, like myself, who have visited the country and are familiar with the characters that form part of the story
