let's start with the good; this awning is huge, about 4.5m long and although it's the same width, once it's up, the area it covers is a little less due to the curvature. We needed a sheltered area, as our tent has no porch and when the weather is inclement, there's no where to hide. In this respect, the awning did a fantastic job of giving us a large sheltered area to sit and cook in, during a rather wet bank holiday weekend.

However, there are a couple of things you need to be aware of. The awning is nearly 20 square meters in area and once assembled with the shock poles at the front forming a nice arch, you have effectively built a 6ft tall, 10 ft wide funnel, which does a very good job of siphoning all the available wind in the area, into the front of your tent! In anything more than a gentle breeze, the large yacht sail that is now attached to your tent, flaps around alarmingly, and it didn't take long for the guy ropes to start lifting their pegs, especially at the front. To stop ours blowing away, we used some nylon rope fed through the bottom two guy rope attachments points on each side, and attached this to a tie out stake (the corkscrew ones) on either side. This, along with a wind break placed along the front and sides helped to reduce the flapping by a huge amount and the awning no longer threatened to take off!

It's also not completely waterproof. We had heavy, but not torrential rain on one day, and while most of the water beaded up and ran off, some did seep through and start to drip off the underside, but all things considered, it was far better than having no awning and you could always apply a spray-on waterproofer.

Made our camping break especially this wet summer. We have a large dome tent which let the rain run in the top of the door when open. Placing the awning over the top not only allowed us to sit out in quite heavy (thunder storm) rain, extended out living space, it also solved our problem with rain coming in with the door open. Took a bit of fiddling to get setup but once up it was sturdy (face away from expected wind direction) and water proof. Need to 'play' a bit more to try to get height to avoid me (rest of family OK) having to stoop but sure this is possible. Guy ropes are very long to allow fitting most tent types and best of all....when packing up, the awning made a perfect shelter over the back of the car and trailer, to warn off those threatening clouds!

I bought the canopy to give us a bit of extra shelter with our tent, which it does, and more, it's huge! Easy to put up and so far hasn't been a problem when the wind and rain got heavy. Not too expensive either, so all in all, a good piece of kit.

Well I got this to throw over my Delica (van with beds in) to give us some more space for day today activities, cooking, drinking and chilling. :)

It turned out to be much bigger than I had envisioned and worked amazingly well.

I think I will be able to put it up better the second time, like with all things you learn a bit as you go.

    I would recomend this item.

I bought this to provide a little extra protection from rain, but also to give some shade to me and my littlun' on our camping holiday (in Norfolk in a reasonably sheltered area of a campsite) without breaking the bank.

The plus side is that this really is very easy to set up (did it single-handed) and will genuinely fit pretty much any tent shape or size, and it certainly kept us (and the tent) dry and gave us a good, spacious area to sit outside in. It stood up to the wet during a heavy rain storm. I should point out that I ignored the instructions that came with it, which say you should put the poles through the front end of the awning first and secure the front bit - I found it impossible to do on my own that way round (it just kept falling over!) - so instead, I just threw the back end over the top of the tent and pegged that down, and only then tackled the front and inserting the poles etc. - it made it SO much easier (in my 'umble!).

HOWEVER - when we had some strong winds, it let us down badly. I cannot begin to describe how incredibly loud the noise is from this awning in the wind - it's that awful, crackly-plasticky whip-crack sound that tarpaulins make on building sites, and it's very very disconcerting when you're inside the tent at night listening to it! The noise from it kept me awake the whole night in a state of mild panic, as it sounded like the tent was about to blow away!!! Also, the awning did actually blow down in the wind on two occasions (I am talking pretty severe gusts here, I should say, not just a breezy day or anything), so I ended up taking the whole thing down after the third day and just sitting in the tent instead. Slept a whole lot better without the noise of it.

A very brief review to say that this is one the best camping accessories that I have bought (along with the Kampa Khazi).

For a minute or two's work in putting it up, one is rewarded with a substantial size outdoor room, an ideal space for cooking, sitting in the shade or sheltering from the rain (we did all three last month in France).

It is light, fits in any convenient place in the roof box or the back of the car and will keep the rain off the entrance door to just about any tent (that alone makes it worth getting). It did not match the colour of our Starcamper Five tent but who minds that? We didn't have to look at it and the great job it did was well worth any lack of visual harmony.

For any camper who wants to make their set-up a little more versatile, I would certainly say that this is a good purchase.
