"Kirkus Reviews

"The Coldest Winter Ever is a tour de force....As finely tuned to its heroine's voice as Alice Walker's The Color Purple....Riveting stuff, with language so frank it curls your hair.

Product Description

Renowned hip-hop artist, writer, and activist Sister Souljah brings the streets of New York to life in a powerful and utterly unforgettable first novel.

"I came busting into the world during one of New York's worst snowstorms, so my mother named me Winter.

Ghetto-born, Winter is the young, wealthy daughter of a prominent Brooklyn drug-dealing family. Quick-witted, sexy, and business-minded, she knows and loves the streets like the curves of her own body. But when a cold Winter wind blows her life in a direction she doesn't want to go, her street smarts and seductive skills are put to the test of a lifetime.

Unwilling to lose, this ghetto girl will do anything to stay on top.

"The Coldest Winter Ever marks the debut of a gifted storyteller. You will never forget this Winter's tale.

I picked up this book at a Hair and Beauty Show in London and had never read one of her titles before. When I finished it I went straight on the internet frantically searching for more of her fiction titles. My 3 sisters and my cousin also couldn't put the book down. It was a masterpiece. Realistic, sad, funny, "street" & oh so real. I laughed with Winter, I cried with Winter, I boosted with Winter, but most of all I wanted to hunt out Sister Souljah and beg - even pay her! to get more material out there. When you finally manage to put this book down you will find yourself oh so vexed that you've come to the end! 5 stars just doesn't even do her justice!

I merely bought this book after recommendation from the site - living in the UK I had never heard of Sister Souljah but boy do I know about her talents now! I finished the book in 2 days and everything else suffered - work, friends, love life!
The book was superbly written and true to life - it was written so well it was like watching a film and seeing the lives of actors rather than reading a book!
Winter was a girl you wanted to hit, scream at, love and give a hug all at once, and reiterated the point that money really doesnt buy you happiness!
This is a recommended MUST READ, and no other book I've read yet has compared to this work of art!

Wish she was my sister!
I think the reason for Sister Souljah's appeal, apart from her writing being crisp, to the point and emotive, is that she is honest. Read more
