About the Author

John Farrar

John Farrar is a seasoned developer and business owner whose company specializes in web-based solutions. His love for design and solving problems has inspired successful customer projects to a number of open source solutions growing in popularity. He has learned ColdFusion, SQL, CSS/web design, AJAX, and other technologies to help fulfill the customer's technical needs. Yet he is more about the business needs and goals than finding a way to use technology for the sake of technology. That is why he uses the handle and company name "SOSensible". Best practices are great guides but they change over time. John tries to implement and extend best practices to respond to project goals. His focus is to create solutions that are accessible, duplicatable, and sustainable which he calls ADS for short.

Some examples of his ADS compliant efforts are his SOS, COOP, and CFish projects. SOS is an application framework that embraces the personality of the developer. This lets them build applications to run on the same site but in the style they like to code. COOP is covered in this book and splits the code that looks more like an obstacle course into separate pages covering page design and business intelligence in cooperative but separate packages. CFish is his latest focus where he is seeking to bring universal web skinning to ColdFusion developers. All of these are focused on increasing functional accessibility, duplicatable reuse, and sustainable results. Best practices are great but John believes we can do better than that.

These principles and his open attitude have given him many opportunities. He has done work for Brunswick Recreation, Sprint, Apple, and Blue Cross in the enterprise realm. This knowledge has inspired and prepared him to also remember the roots of his childhood where his father was a small business owner. Realizing that small businesses make up over 90 percent of the market, he seeks to extend the practice beyond the enterprise boarders. He has also contributed to several other community projects and enjoyed speaking at national developer conventions over the years.

This book targets novice ColdFusion developers, but will serve just as well for experienced developers. I've been working with ColdFusion for about 10 years now, and can say I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

this book will take you through every step on becoming a successful ColdFusion developer, and takes you through all the goodness recently added by the version 9 of ColdFusion.

I was mostly interested on the ORM side of things, and can confirm the books explains it rather well, and gave me a very good insight on where to go to get more experience with it.

It also takes you through all the new functions and tags, but sometimes lacks a bit in real-life examples (hence the 4 star rate).

If you are a new developers interested in learning ColdFusion, this is a "must have" book, and if you like me is an experienced ColdFusion developer, this book will give you what you need to stay on top of the technology.

Little effort in this update of ColdFusion 8 Developer Tutorial. 13 Jan 2011
By Shelby Hill - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
There were/are tons of typo's in the code samples and throughout. In addition 0 - ZERO effort was made to update the book from Coldfusion 8. The samples and images still have references made to CF 8. Some of the code simply wouldn't work as it was written even after removing the typos. The last 3 chapters of the book were devoted to packages outside of Coldfusion. This bothered me a little as it wasn't a whose who but more of a use this. A tutorial is suppose to teach you how to get up and running and be successful not pimp other group's projects.

In the end I had to give it a couple stars because I did manage to learn the material; however, in some cases it's because I had to fix so many typos and figure out the right way to do something. I spent a lot of time looking up issues with Google.

And don't even bother looking at the blog they point you to in the beginning of the book. It's simply a shell with no substance. To get the code samples you actually need to go to the Packt publishing website. The samples don't match up very well with the book either. Many times when you look at what he tells you to type and use and then go look at the sample it will have twice as much code in it.

In one particular section he doesn't even tell you about a bunch of components you need that he just glosses over. It would have been better to spend a chapter on these extended components and how to do that instead of those other third party tag packages at the end of the book.

Interesting writing style - like his earlier CF8 book 18 Oct 2010
By Art Luverr - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The educational method used by the author is different and very to the point. Do as he says, the lessons need to be performed as they are being read to receive the value of the lesson. Written with minimalist background commentary. Refreshing and somewhat foreign, but an effective way to learn higher level coldfusion (CF9). I also liked the brevity of the first book (CF8). A little of this and a little of that covers most bases without ranging too broadly or too deep.

Considering the paucity of any Coldfusion books available, it is recommended - another addition to the meager coldfusion library that I have been able to assemble.

When is O'Reilly going to update their coldfusion tutorial/appendix contributions? Hunh? I liked their Coldfusion MX book.
