Review

"Sheffield's uncommon vision and storytelling skill will keep you on the edge of your seat."--David Brin
"Fits comfortably on the shelf with Clarke and Asimov and Heinlein. He writes classic stuff."--"Analog"
"Written at the level of Arthur c. Clarke at his best--with deft characterization, pellucid handling of scientific questions, good world building and real wit--this is arguable Sheffield's best book yte."--"Booklist"

Product Description

Twenty-five years ago there was a great interplanetary war in the Solar System. It was a suicidal spasm in which terrible weapons were entered and used; in which nine billion people were killed. The rivalries that led to the war are not gone. And a few of those deadly weapons remain - some still orbiting the sun in the debris of destroyed ships, some deliberately placed in storage.

For some reason the publishers like comparing this author with Asimov and Clark. Surely by the late 90s this puts off more people than it encourages. I can see similarity with Asimov in that there are central characters engaged in a bit of detective work and its mostly a battle of brains rather than brawn. Thankfully it doesn't have 95 pages of dialogue where you are supposed to spot the clue. Anyway... this book is fun to read. He's taken the same universe as the Ganymede Club and selected the one of the same characters, but not the one you might expect... Bat. Mostly set in space, or underwater, or under planets .. good escapist stuff.

This is basically a "who and why-dunnit" in space. The characters are well drawn, and there are loads of "oh yeah, that's why that bit happened earlier!" moments, which I really like. With such a good book, it's a pity he cover art is so gash - it reminds me of the stuff I used to read in the late 70s/early 80s. OK, so I'm a SF geek, but I don't necessarily want to let on in public.

(Not quite as embarrassing on the tube as the Carlton Mellick III book I'm reading at the minute, mind)

Well, this had a sub plot that was a bit "Hercule Poirot in Space" but I took three Sci-Fi theme books with me to Spain to read on the beach and I have to say that this one was a stonker.
The characters are so real that you empathise immediatley, the plot is believable, the story riveting. Buy this, grab a rum and coke and chill out.
