Product Description

Forget The Love Boat.

Jason Davey has literally run away to sea after the death of his makeup artist wife, finding work as a contract entertainer aboard a much-adored but soon-to-be-retired cruise ship, the Star Sapphire.

But when three people from his past come board as passengers, Jason's routine week-long trip to Alaska becomes anything but.

First, a frightening, middle-of-the-night fire shatters his fragile sense of security and sets the rest of the crew on edge.

Then SaylerGurl, an anonymous and delusional stalker from Jason's Twitterlife, begins sending him taunting and threatening messages from somewhere on board.

Jason's wife was once employed by Diana Wyndham, a beautiful, aging and eccentric actress. Now Diana's occupying one of the ship's luxury suites, and it soon becomes murderously clear to Jason that she has more on her mind than her favourite stuffed monkey.

And hard-drinking ex-rocker Rick Redding, in the stateroom beside Diana, may know more about Jason's secret pedigree than anyone suspects.

Guided by his "guardian angel" Jilly - who he only knows as a constructed personality on Twitter - Jason - along with everyone aboard his beloved ship - must survive a trial by fire and ice on the journey to Juneau, Skagway and Glacier Bay.

A detailed observer of life above and below decks, Jason narrates his - and the Sapphire's - story with drama, humour, and a touch of the supernatural. And with poignant and dangerous parallels to recent tragedies at sea, you'll rethink everything you thought you knew about a voyage to the glaciers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mystery on the freezing high seas 27 May 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The Star Sapphire is an old lady of the sea; a second home and perhaps the only home for some of her long-serving crew. But at the end of this cruise, the breaker's yard looms - the Sapphire is being decommissioned. But those passengers hoping for a quiet game of deck quoits or a flutter in the casino on a journey to the far North are in for a shock. Among the well-heeled (and the well-oiled) a saboteur lurks, determined that the ship will not make it to her final port of call.

Our narrator and tour guide is Jason Davey, the Sapphire's entertainments officer, whose breezy professional manner masks private woes, made worse by figures from his chequered past embarking in bulk. The riotous mix of passengers make this trip most enjoyable for the reader (if hazardous for those on board) and Coldplay a welcome addition to the mystery genre. The companion website is also a stroke of genius and well worth a visit.

I haven't been put off taking a cruise, but if I were to hear raised voices or strange noises from behind a door marked "Staff Only", I think I'd scuttle back to my cabin and put on my life jacket. Just in case.

Right from the opening chapter I was drawn into the story and couldn't put it down! It is set on a cruise ship that has only a few more trips to make before she is retired. Jason, the narrator, is a musician working on board. Jason is an avid user of Twitter and as the story unfolds we begin to realise that he is being 'e' stalked. Things begin to hot up when Jason discovers that the stalker has joined the cruise. They hot up even more when Jason is attacked and his cabin is set alight. Winona keeps us on the edge of our seats right to the very end. Twists and turns throughout. Fabulous. This is the first book that I have read by Winona Kent and I can't wait to read another.

5.0 out of 5 stars First rate story and storytelling 30 Sep 2012
By J. Weight - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I received this book from the author with a request for review.

I liked this book from the very start. The setting is marvelous and unusual: a vintage cruiser ship currently doing 7-day Alaskan cruises. Jason, an entertainer on the cruise ship, is the story's narrator. He has a great voice with a gentle sense of humor that shows in his observations of his life, fellow crew members and the passengers, and frequently about himself.

This is not a thrill-a-second story. Rather, it slowly unfolds and reveals more layers of intrigue. However, it never felt slow to me. Jason is a good story teller and pretty much the book could have been about nothing more than life on a cruise ship and it would've been interesting. Pointless, but interesting. Fortunately for us readers, however, there's more to this story than life on a cruise ship. The pace continues to pick up as events twist and turn to the final revelations in the end. Nothing horribly surprising - unexpected, but not surprising - but well told and compelling enough to keep me turning pages until I was finally done. I'd actually look forward to another book featuring this character, but this one doesn't really hint at a sequel or leave much mystery for another.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it's a good value for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars There Is Nothing Cold About Cold Play 24 July 2012
By J. Huggard - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
When Winona Kent visted my website, Cruise Bruise, and asked me if she could send me a copy of her new book, Cold Play, I was reluctant. I'm on record as not being a fan of novels, especially romance novels.

As soon as I opened the cover of Cold Play, I began to stall between words. It seemed odd, the writing seemed off with incomplete sentences and phrases. Kent was deliberately stalling the reading and comprehension process, making me stop to think, to hover on the words. I didn't like it at all and I was only on page two of the book. I wanted to put the book down, refuse to read any more. After all, it's no secret that I don't like fiction; I'm highly critical of love stories and novels that have no real life value. Yet here I am on page two, my mind stopping and starting like a car being clutched for the first time by a teenage driver, trying to figure out, what in the hell this author is doing.

As I get to the bottom of page two, the last paragraph, everything changes. Kent has my attention, my full attention. I have work to do, real work on the computers in front of me. Yet, I know, I won't be able to put this book down until I've read the last page.

Kent starts the story off quickly with drama and action. It's the middle of the night, wee hours of the morning, nearly all the passengers are asleep in their cabins, when a musician aboard, Jason Davey, happens upon the smell of something burning.

While he wants to run, to save himself, he feels compelled as a result of his training to aid and assist with the reporting and containment of the fire, then to assist passengers, who are bewildered, squinting from the sudden exposure to light, wearing their pajamas which are still warm from being snuggled beneath the blankets on their cabin beds.

While the novel is fiction, the event is very real, as terrifying as it gets on a real cruise ship in the real world . . .

4.0 out of 5 stars The hidden side of a cruiseship 5 July 2012
By Akamai - Published on Amazon.com

Anyone who has ever gone on a cruise and wondered, "What are the staff really like, and what happens behind the scenes?" will enjoy this book - but let's hope it's not YOUR next cruise it's based on! Life onboard an Alaska-bound boat is well-described with details experienced cruisers will recognize. The descriptions of passengers and crew are touched with humor, and multiple mysterious story lines keep a reader's attention. What sets this book apart from other fast-paced reads is the quality of the language - the author's MFA is evident - but it's never stuffy, just fun. This would be a perfect beach book - or one to take on a cruise!
