Having read CJ Lines's debut novel, Filth Kiss, and suffered from terrible nightmares about disembodied genitalia for some time afterwards, I picked up Cold Mirrors with some trepidation. Fortunately, for his second book, Mr Lines has somewhat turned down the unadulterated gore and gone for a more subtle, chilling approach. He builds the tension by way of ordinary, everyday scenes which gradually descend into sheer unadulterated terror. In "Come Die with Me", a group of friends build their own take on "Come Dine with Me", replacing dinner parties with gruesome murders. In "The Trending" a student finds he has bitten off more than he can chew when he harnessed the power of the internet to communicate with deceased loved ones, and in "Duplicity" the protagonist solves the age-old problem of being torn between two lovers in the most horrific way imaginable. Generally at least one person ends up dead, or worse, and there's a good dose of zombies, haunted houses and even the odd clown thrown in. My personal favourite is "In Every Dream Home a Heartache", which should serve as a grave warning to any childless couple considering adoption. This collection is an essential addition to every bookshelf.
