An anthology of songs from the Fens from Mary Humphries and Anahata This is Mary and Anahata's fourth album, and their second devoted to songs from East Anglia. This one is an anthology of songs from their researches into songs from the Fens. Mary and Anahata have a mission to unearth local songs from archives and restore them to the repertoire. Their first East Anglian theme album, Fenlandia, features East Anglian Songs of many genres, whereas this one features songs specifically from the Fens. They live in Cambridgeshire and are actively involved in clubs and sessions in East Anglia, whilst they also perform at festivals, concert and folk clubs as a duo, play in the ceilidh bands Fendragon, English Rebellion and Four Hand Band and for Pig Dyke Molly based in Peterborough. They give presentations and talks about their research into songs and run instrumental workshops using tunes they have arranged. Tracks; 1.Lakes of Cold Fen / 2. Royals Quickstep & Kempshot Hunt / 3. I decided to buy this album after being impressed by the videos on youtube of some of the tracks. In particular Northern Lass/Northern Frisk (soo wish I could play that well on concertina).
Both the tunes and songs impressed. I'm not usually one for trad tracks with singing, prefer instrumental but with Mary Humphreys' vocals you can't help but be drawn into the narrative of the songs.
A thoroughly lovely and inspiring album.
