Excellent 19 Sep 2010
By Emma
Format:Paperback
I bought this book after I saw Aline Templeton talk at the Edinburgh Book Festival. I do enjoy crime thrillers, although have never found an author who could rival Ian Rankin, until now. DI Marjory Fleming is a good substitute for Rebus, who is a well missed character in crime fiction. As I was born and brought up in the Dumfries and Galloway area and also know people who were affected by the foot and mouth outbreak I was personally interested in both the setting and themes of this book. Aline Templeton captured the essence of the south west of Scotland very well, especially the small town mentality, the remoteness and the weather. I found her characters to be both endearing and believable. I was interested in the difficulties experienced by DI Fleming in reconciling her personal and professional lives. All in all, a very well written and engaging crime thriller. I look forward to reading more from this series.

Loved it! 16 Aug 2005
By L. J. Roberts TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Even though I suspected the killer, it didn't diminish my enjoyment in the reading. The characters are dimensional and so well drawn. The dialogue is excellent, even with the Scottish terms I didn't quite understand. She descriptions paint visual pictures of the people and the area which build tension and suspense in the plot. Her writing is described as atmospheric, and it is. This is the first book I've read by Templeton, but it only took a few pages to decide it won't be the last.

Warm on the Page 17 Mar 2009
Format:Paperback
The characters are well drawn, interesting and varied. This entertaining book is full of authentic detail (including an awareness of legal processes which many writers ignore). The author convincingly takes the reader back to the foot and mouth epidemic which ravaged the countryside and the lives of country people in the early days of the Blair Government. There are plenty of twists and turns in the plot, and I look forward to reading more D I Fleming stories.
