4.0 out of 5 stars Assured debut 8 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback
As Sheriff Walt Longmire sits looking at the file of a case that has haunted him for two years the dead body of one the accused is discovered. Cody Pritchard has been shot & was accused, along with three other high school boys, of the rape of Melissa Little Bird, a Cheyenne girl with fetal alchohol syndrome. They are guilty but given suspended sentences and this has left a bad taste in Sheriff Longmires mouth as well as the wider Native American community. As he embarks on finding out whether this was a hunting accident or a revenge murder we are treated to some great writing.

As suspects mount, including best friend Henry Standing Bear, and he tries to track down the remaining three boys the story unwinds brilliantly. It has its own pace and style, slow at times but never boring, and, as another reviewer has stated, Craig Johnson seems to have appeared fully formed as an assured, confident writer.

Will be tracking down the rest in this series to see how the characters develop and to read more of those beautiful descriptions of the Wyoming landscape. Recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the TV series! 31 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
You may have caught TV's LONGMIRE on UK's Channel 5, but this is the first book in the ongoing series of books by Craig Johnson about Walt Longmire, the Sheriff of Absaroka County in Wyoming. I have read all of them so far (I hope there will be many more!) and have loved each and every one of them. The Cold Dish introduces Walt, his best and oldest friend Henry Standing Bear (I defy any female not to fall in love with him, just a little), and Vic Moretti, Walt's deputy sheriff, with a mouth on her like a dockworker. The story itself revolves around a possible revenge killing (the 'cold dish'), excellently told, but there's far more than that. Craig Johnson has a flair for making the reader see the scenery of Wyoming, smell the dust, and feel the snow on their faces. He also has a great sense of humour, and there are sections in all his books you just have to laugh out loud at, something which is sadly missing from the TV version.

All in all, I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys proper characters with life under their belts, with the added bonus of great plots wonderfully told. Thank you, Mr Johnson!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best first novel I've read in many years 13 July 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
How did Craig Johnson get this good in his first book? This novel has depth, humour and an enveloping sense of place. The characters are enticing; vividly human and complex, with backgrounds that are dense but never dull. The writing is snappy and the dialogue shows he has a finely tuned ear for the way that people really talk, only he makes it better than life. If you've never come across Craig Johnson before, welcome- the books are lovely!

4.0 out of 5 stars First of Longmire tales 29 April 2014
By Digger
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Enjoyable read, interesting mostly because of the American Indians' Reservation influence and characterisation.
Also, descriptive passages of travelling thru snow blizzards, on foot, in Wyoming winter were very emotive.

Enjoyed this more than the TV episodes - more mystic at times mixed with some trad detective work. Great characters.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I expected
I thought (hoped) that Longmire would be another Jack Reacher, but got a bit bored with the book about mid way so went onto something else.
