Product Description

Work hard, play hard. That's the credo on the oilfields of Alaska's North Slope, where harsh conditions and long, isolated shifts make for some of the best-paid jobs in the state. Management typically turns a blind eye to off-hours drinking and gambling, but a spate of drug-related deaths means it's time for Royal Petroleum to get its house in order. Working on behalf of the Anchorage DA, Kate Shugak is brought in undercover to identify the dealer and shut down the flow of cocaine. Of course, the dealer might have some very different ideas.

Informed by her own years working on the North Slope, Dana Stabenow's A Cold-Blooded Business captures a slice of life in a very Alaskan milieu.

Synopsis

Alaskan private detective Kate Shugak goes undercover to expose the illicit drug trade along the TransAlaska Pipeline, but the case is threatened when her own cover is blown and the body count begins to rise.

A Kate Shugak mystery promises to put you in that environment, with Alaska's natural and human challenges. Kate, an astute Aleut investigator finds the source of drug dealing among workers on a pipeline and captures both the dangers and the collective pressures on these workers to buy what their dealers are selling. This is a well written convincing mystery with a good characterization of those who win and those who lose. A bit predictable, but this is a great sleuth, and I will read all of her adventures, also because the cool, assured, and independent Kate is strong and centered.

When I grow up I want to be Kate Shugak. I want to be
fiercely independant, pretty, strong and intelligent. I want to work for money when I need it at the jobs I choose. I want to be able to live off the land and live in the middle of nowhere. I want a beautiful fierce dog at my side. I want the relationships in my life to be by their own rules. I want to live an unboring life of excitement, whether it's dangerous or peaceful.

Never mind that Kate is two years younger than I am now,
I want to be her when I grow up!

This is the first Kate Shugak mystery that I have read. There did seem to be information missing about the characters (probably explained from earlier books in the series), but I still enjoyed it.The location, Oil pipeline Alaska, was an interesting backdrop to the mystery. The characters are more interesting than the mystery, which was fairly predictable. Good read, though.

This is the way the gods ordained the destiny of men, to bear such burdens in our lives, while they feel no affliction. . . . Endure it, then. Priam to Achilles, wasnt it? No, Achilles to Priam. It was Hector who had died, and Achilles who had killed him. "e;
