This is the second book in a series of three, which include the first book, Cold Shoulder and the third, Cold Heart. Don't worry if you haven't read the first book, La Plante adds enough hooks into the story so that you understand Lorraine and what has gone on before.
On the face of it, Lorraine Page is an unlikely heroine. She is an ex cop who has been sacked from her job due to her battle with alcoholism. She has also lost her husband and children and you would think that she would become an embittered person. Not so. Lorraine is determined to put her life back together and with the help of her friend Rosie, she forms an investigative agency. Lorraine is one of the best at what she does but unfortunately because of her past, few jobs come her way and the agency's future looks in peril.
Just in the nick of time she is asked to investigate a case involving the disappearance of the 18 year old daughter of a has been movie star. Even better, she is offered a $1 million bonus if she finds Anna Louise - whether alive or dead.
As Lorraine investigates she is drawn into the lives of Anna's parents and finds herself in a world surrounded by drugs, psychics, violence and Voodoo. Her search eventually takes her to New Orleans and the Mardi Gras where we are treated to some insightful descriptions of what life is like in the seedy world behind the glamour of the carnival.
The story is full of twists and turns, you think you know who the main suspect is many times, but believe me, you will probably be wrong.
If you enjoy crime books with suspense, intrigue, plausible plots and well defined characters then you will love this one.
