Biography

2000 is (not) the year of NOFX! But don't listen to the hype; listen to the record. Pump Up The Valuum is more clever, more irreverent and more crude than NOFX has ever been: and hot on the heels of the unprecedented The Decline, an amazing 18 minute punk-a-thon, NOFX come slamming back with 14 instant classics (in about 32 minutes).

Pump Up The Valuum combines some of NOFX's ... Read more in Amazon's NOFX Store

NOFX, the American punk rock band from Los Angeles, are rated one of the most successful independent bands of all time with over 6 million record sales worldwide. Going since 1983 they have performed extensively and appeared at many prestigious venues, concerts and events alongside the best in the world of rock music.

The band is no stranger to surprise either in it's album content or stage persona and the "Cokie The Clown" album is no exception containing an eclectic mixture of material on this five-song EP made up of songs that overflowed from it's earlier "Coaster" album's studio sessions.

It opens with "Cokie The Clown" and as the first word of the title gives away, is about someone just out of detox who tries to hide behind the mask of being a clown, fails, soon becomes drug addled again and drags his patrons down with him not unlike the character Saint Jimmy, in Green Day's 'American Idiot' musical. Whilst a somewhat turgidly depressing scenario, the track is strong, and edgy and speeds along in a catchy fashion.

The rather oddball, for a punk rock band that is, "Straight Outta Massachusetts", tells to a slow 'rockabilly' lick, the story of Fat Mike's moving from his birth town at the age of 5, "cause it was f...in' cold" but is a very haunting number that gets stuck in your mind and would be my album stand-out selection.

"My Orphan Year" is certainly different and not what you expect from NOFX as it is the sad, poignant tale to an acoustic guitar accompaniment of the death of Fat Mike's parents, his Dad from dementia, and Mum from cancer and his personal emotions. It is very moving and opens up a whole new softer side of Mike.

Such an amazing piece of awesome. Enough said.

But I'll elaborate for those who want me to. You're welcome. Starts off with a very circusy sound and sets the mood for the title track, which is brilliant. I don't actually know how to explain it, but listen to it a few times, and you'll understand. Straight Outta Massachusetts is sweet too. Quite short, but has a nice tune. And the lyrics are easy to learn. There's a video on YouTube of Fat Mike singing this song on some messed ups show with a puppet. Mike's daughter is also there moshing around. Good video, maybe you should check it out...

Anyway, Fermented and Flailing and Codependence Day are two good tracks and sorta grow on you after listening for a while. They're good to start off with as background music, and when you have time, the lyrics are printed on the inside cover so you can do whatever you do with lyrics.

The EP finishes off with the acoustic version of Mike's sad story about his parents and their deaths. My Orphan Year is one of my favorite NOFX songs and the acoustic makes it THAT much effective in depressing the **** outta you. There's a video to go along with this on YouTube too. So the EP ends on a bit of a downer.

Anyway, recommended, and it's really cheap. If you go to the New & Used link, some of the New options are amazingly cheap. I got mine from allyourmusic and I can verify that they're highly trustworthy, so the cheaper option here is ideal. Imma stfu now.

Classic NOFX. Straight Outta Massachusetts isn't the best tune ever but the rest of the tunes are good, even the acoustic version of My Orphan Year. Worth buying for Cokie alone though to be honest. If you like NOFX buy it, or just rip it off the web, whatever.

Fat Mike is convinced he's best at doing clumsy politics or clumsier sex/drugs montages. Of course, anyone with any sense knows his most relevant songs are increasingly the personal anecdotes sparingly sprinkled across a NOFX record. And so, skip to a tender acoustic version of `My Orphan Year' - the best song from recent full-length Coaster - and enjoy the title track's music without bothering with the lyrics sheet.

Best Tracks: 'Cokie the Clown', 'My Orphan Year (Acoustic)'

This squirting flower, that isn't flour 25 Nov. 2009
By Tasty Greens - Published on Amazon.com

Evidently, this EP consists of songs that were left off of Coaster, NOFX's brilliant full length album released earlier this year. But these songs are all great -- this doesn't feel like a leftover offering. In particular, "Fermented and Flailing" is one of the most awesome-est songs to come out of the melodic hardcore mode that NOFX has developed on recent albums.

Lyrically, the usual NOFX themes are present here -- drugs, the decline of western civilization, Fat Mike's childhood, drugs. Fat Mike has become an excellent lyricist (simultaneously poignant and hilarious) and these songs further showcase his songwriting brilliance.

The final song on the disc, an acoustic version of Coaster's "My Orphan Year", would perhaps be a throwaway tune if it weren't punctuated with some acoustic fret-rattle-buzz that gives the heartfelt tune an additional weight of melancholy. Never thought a NOFX tune would bring a tear to my eye.
Awesome NOFX EP! 22 April 2013

One of the best NOFX EP's by far. I love this album. It has some great songs and in my opinion it is just sad that NOFX didn't go ahead and make this album into a full LP of Cokie The Clown.

Everything you'd expect from a B-side album from NOFX. A couple of really awesome punk rock songs and then Fat Mike doing an acoustic version of a song(which is good). Theses guys have yet to disappoint me.

So this is some of the material that didn't make it onto 'Coaster'? Makes sense since these are pretty good and 'Coaster' was a heaping pile of boring disappointment.

Most of this short disk is what you expect from NOFX. Straight outta Massachusetts is the best one on it.
