As someone just starting out in the world of numismatics, I have found this book to be an absolutely invaluable guide.

This book catalogues all the types of coins minted in England. It provides clear pictures and descriptions allowing the easy identification of coins, and price guides based on the last years auction prices. Some people have complained about the organisation of the listing, I can only disagree. I have used it to identify quite a few coins (including Roman coins) with no trouble. The price guides are essential for the beginner, and have allowed me (a fairly innocent novice in the coin collecting game) to avoid being ripped off (and spot a bargain) on a couple of occasions.

The book itself is printed on good quality paper, and has a comforting heft to it. It feels like the sort of book that would look good on the coffee table, but will also stand up to the wear and tear of regular reference and being carted round various coin auctions. Purchasers of the book receive a postcard, which entitles them to a free gift of a jigsaw of the cover picture when posted to Spink. A nice touch I thought.

An essential guide for the numismatist, whether a seasoned collector or a beginner.

I am fairly new to coin collecting. My simple collection has so far been limited to the special edition two pound coins to mark historic events. I have recently branched out to include some of the historic crowns and £5 coins as the detail on these larger coins is simply stunning. More recently though, I really fancied getting hold of a piece of really old change. You know, Henry 8th kind of vintage. Imagine the hands that these small metal discs had been passed through, consider what they had been used to buy, where had they been all these 500 or so years. If only they could talk.

It was then that I realised I had no clue as to what such a coin would look like or indeed how much I should pay for it. Well, this book has answered these concerns. It has a huge collection of well photographed coins going back hundreds of years. It includes a small biography of the monarch of the time which really brings the historical context of the coins to life. It also includes the expected prices vs. conditions. In the introduction there is a nice bit about market trends and an explanation of numismatic terms which I found most interesting.

I certainly feel a lot more comfortable expanding my collection armed with this valuable reference. I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in English coinage. Well written and good value.

I am disappointed with the ommisions in this 2010 edition. For example, no shillings are listed for the Fifth Issue of Elizabeth hammered coins. But the 2002 edition that I still have correctly shows this information.

It is worrying that Spink has produced a book with this and other errors.
Perhaps they left the proof reading to the tea boy...
