This extensive catalogue is an annually updated, illustrated, serial publication focusing on coin collecting, from an established firm that deals with coins, banknotes and antiquities. It is aimed at the coin trade and collectors and intends to be more of an encylopaedia than a catalogue. The material is split into hammered and milled sections and presented in denomination order; within each denomination, coins are listed by monarch. "Collecting hints" on the availability of grades and conditions are offered for all series, and a new numbering system is used, enabling instant identification of the issuing monarch and the denomination of the coin. All the coin prices have been reviewed, and changes made in the light of market alterations. The work is enhanced with maps, indexes, a bibliography, photographs, and line drawings.

This book takes the reader back through centuries of minting, from early hammered silver to milled and modern coinage. Good collecting hints for each individual coin type are given, helping the collector to make the most of his/her hobby. A 1:1 scale black and white picture (perhaps a bit small for very little coins)shows the obverse and reverse of each specimen, for which a short history of events leading to its minting is also given. I consider this catalogue an overall good companion also for anyone wishing to take up the fascinating hobby of metal detecting,as,like in my case, there is certainly little satisfaction in digging up ancient silver coins without knowing what they are! Do you agree?

This book is excellent! Why did it go out of print???,

This book gives excellent coverage of the general background knowledge of British and UK coinage in just the right amount of detail. There is so much that I have learned in addition to the basic mintage information. Other books don't really compare. The organization is excellent, the illustrations plentiful and the historical information significant and interesting. In addition there are "collecting hints" boxes by each issue that offer advice to collectors about what to look for in obtaining a specimen. The vintage photos of coins being minted are an added bonus, although the book could be printed on better quality paper considering that it is a hardback. The price seems quite high, but that may be because it is now out of print. That's my last complaint....why did it go out of print???? A new edition with more up-to-date prices would be great. But still, the information inside this is worth the five stars...it is a book that you can sit down and read, not just a "price list." Any collector of UK coins should have this ref in their library.
