Sexual offenders typically have a personal history of abuse of various kinds and it seems that most of them would prefer to live offence–free lives. William Marshall and his colleagues have written extensively about sex offending for many years and are the experts in this field, without a doubt. This is an introductory text that is a must to those clinicians entering the sexual offending field. I was particularly impressed with their approaches to treatment and avoidance of authoritative, self-serving, purely confrontational approaches and what they had to say about treatment that attempted to assist and help the offender. Many pedophiles, one must always realise, do not for a second want to "be pedophiles", they have the unfortunate affliction. The text staves away from the leper mentality of locking sex offenders for ever.
