Book Description

23 April 2009
What happens to you in life matters less than the way you feel about life: that′s the message of cognitive behavioural therapy. If you′ve ever tried to change something about yourself – your mood, your weight, your behaviour – you′ll have noticed that change often hurts, so you stop trying. CBT can help you when change starts to hurt. In this book, professional CBT practitioner Avy Joseph shows you how to challenge negative thoughts and unhealthy beliefs to improve your outlook in your personal and professional life. Whether you want to break the spiral of depression, anxiety or guilt, achieve work–life balance or make an important change, this book will help you reach your goals and maintain a positive outlook – no matter what life throws at you. Remember: It′s you – not your circumstance – that holds the key to change. Don′t limit yourself.

Product Description

From the Author

At the heart of Cognitive Behavioural philosophy is emotional responsibility. The fact that, on the whole, we are responsible for our feelings and behaviours. In particular, it is our beliefs and attitudes that cause our feelings and behaviours. You can learn how to overcome the past, present and future problems. So if we want to change our emotions about something, learn, move on, or achieve a goal then changing our beliefs is good way to do it because our beliefs are within our own control.

We have all learned to think in a particular way and therefore we can unlearn it if it doesn't help us. You don't have to wait for someone else. You can do it! Emotional responsibility and our beliefs can help or hinder our achievements. So if you have healthy beliefs then you have a solid foundation for achieving your realistic goals, but if your beliefs are unhealthy then you will likely sabotage your own goals.

Whether your goal is to lose weight, be more confident, achieve academic or work success, be more assertive or just to feel calmer and happier about yourself then this book is for you. It is about showing you how you can change your unhelpful beliefs and attitudes about yourself - the beliefs and attitudes that have so far stopped you in your track and sabotaged things for you when you attempted to take action. This is done through Cognitive behaviour Therapy and this you can learn to apply.

Did you know that when you set goals you feel tension and negative emotions? Did you know that this is natural and that you can overcome it without giving up on your goals?

I hope you enjoy the book and I hope you apply what you read and gain from it.

Avy

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful & clear 13 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
Its over a week since I finished this book but it it still very much with me. The reader is taken on a very clear, logical journey through the theory behind Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and how it can be applied to problems and obstacles they may be facing. Its a facet of therapy which is mentioned continually but one I had only half understood until now. The exercises and areas for reflection are very useful and can be easily be applied to your own life and I find I am still surprising myself with the new clarity of thought it has afforded me, and more importantly the tools to use these new insights to move forward. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to identify old, negative ways of thinking and behaviours and replace them with more positive and useful ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars A long awaited title but well worth the wait! 21 May 2009
Format:Paperback
As a practitioner of CBT and REBT myself I cannot recommend this title enough. Avy Joseph's first title delivers on many levels and is written in a very practical no-nonsense style. It is direct and to the point yet insightful at the same time. His approach is refreshingly clear and offers the reader proven techniques. It shows us that change really is possible in the here and now, if only we will commit to that change by assuming emotional responsibility. He has a way of explaining various points with a clarity not seen in many other books and offers a philosophical depth to CBT which many people don't always seem to realise is there. The book is full of helpful practical exercises encouraging the reader to fully participate in the process as they read, moving away from a purely theoretical perspective. Change only occurs by truly `doing' and the text advocates just that. I will most definitely be recommending this title to clients as it serves as an excellent adjunct to work in session and it is also affordable. Layman and seasoned therapists alike will also no doubt benefit. To go against everything REBT stands for, this book is, well how can I put it...a MUST read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical and no-nonsense 1 July 2009
By M Lobo
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I had Avy as a lecturer when I did my LCCH hypnotherapy diploma course, a long while ago, and what struck me then was his practical, no-nonsense approach - direct, but insightful at the same time. So when I heard about his book on CBT, I didn't need much persuading to buy it. I haven't been disappointed! It's not just a load of theory and the reader is actively encouraged to "challenge negative thoughts and unhealthy beliefs" with helpful practical exercises. What's more, the book is affordable. I would strongly recommend it to other therapists and, most certainly, to clients as well.

This is an excellent book, although when I started to read it I didn't think it was going to be, the author seemed to be quite repetitive.
But, after a while the penny dropped and then I could see why;- it is important to get use to questioning our thoughts, that is the therapy, and I soon began thinking this way automatically. Besides this, the author delivered some very interesting learning, its always nice to understand something new that can be the missing pieces of the jigsaw puzzle of one's self..

I found that quite soon I was setting out my goals using his guide and everything became so clear. I began immediately to work towards each goal and I identified my negative thought patterns straight away. 2 months later I am more organised, focused and productive than I have ever been in my life. I am a working mum and suddenly I am managing to keep my home and work life organised, keep on top of my teenage son and his schooling, and attend to my hobbies of Photography, Reading, Gardening and Art. I have also began working on home improvements and done lots of other stuff that I have put of for years like re written my C.V and started writing book reviews! Its all good, this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent CBT book 12 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this book for two reasons, firstly because Avy was my tutor at LCCH and secondly because I have a huge amount of respect for him both as a person and as a lecturer and educator. I have been rewarded.

This book is really worthwhile for both therapists and clients. Whilst there is a very sound REBT theoretical approach, it reads extremely well and is based on common sense. The reader is has the opportunity to challenge, and hopefully overcome, his or her negative thoughts and unhealthy limiting beliefs with down to earth practical exercises.

I strongly recommend it to other therapists and regularly suggest that my clients buy it to help them with the process of change and to complement the work we do together.

It has also proved to be immensely useful for me in my own life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gives you the tools 23 April 2011
Format:Paperback
What I liked about this is that it is proven. I now have the motivation (and courage) to accelerate my career into a whole new level. Now I am the one in control of my destiny. In fact after reading many books on the same subject, this gives just honest to good strategies and guidance. This book certainly gives you the tools to move forward, it is up to you how you use them.
