Product Description

Product Description

There have been enormous advances over the last decade in our understanding of cognitive function, particularly aspects of memory, language and attention, but these have not been made accessible to clinicians. This book aims to incorporate these advances in theory into clinical practice and to provide a practical approach to cognitive valuation at the bedside, based on methods developed at the Cambridge clinic over the past 15 years. Designed primarily for neurologists, psychiatrists and geriatricians in training who require a practical guide to assessing higher mental function, the book will also be of interest to clinical psychologists. In this long-awaited second edition, John Hodges has substantially re-organised and expanded on the original text. The book includes a new chapter devoted to the Revised Version of the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination (ACE-R), with a description of its uses and limitations along with normative data. Given the importance of the early detection of dementia a chapter is dedicated to this topic which draws on advances over the past decade. Several new illustrative case histories have also been added and all of the case descriptions have been orientated around the use of the ACE-R in clinical practice.

About the Author

Professor Hodges has a particular interest in memory, language and early onset dementia syndromes. He directs the Memory and the Early Onset Dementia Clinics at Addenbrooke's Hospital and co-ordinates a multi-disciplinary research team consisting of neuropsychologists, behavioural neurologists and neuroimagers. He has authored over 300 peer reviewed papers and approximately 100 chapters and reviews. Professor Hodges has written books on transient amnesia, and cognitive assessment for clinicians, and co-authored, with Dr Berrios, a book on memory disorders and psychiatric practice. He recently edited the first textbook dedicated to early onset dementia syndromes. He was the founding co-editor of Neurocase and is now associate editor of Brain. He has also lectured extensively around the world.

Great practical book 19 July 2009
By SDA
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent book, bringing the experience of a specialist clinician, and a little of the mystery of the neuropsychological assessment into the reach of general clinicians with an interest in cognitive assessment. It has useful practical advice, and I particularly found the illustrative cases helpful. Highly recommended.

This is an excellent introudction to cognitive assessmeent for clinicans who need more than the rudimentary tests they apply, to understand the underlying principles and disorders which affect cognitive functions and to have a working knowledge of more specialist tests that specialists like clinical psychologists use. An essnetial read for anyone working in geriatric medicine or old age psychiatry or neuropsychiatry.

In the UK core medical training, there is virtually no mention of cognitive neurology. It hardly appears in the MRCP(UK) either. This is staggering given the increasing prevalence and dementia of dementia, worldwide and specifically in the UK. Prof. Hodges' brief guide will therefore be enormously useful to junior physicians who wish to have a sound overview of the cognitive assessment, written by one of the most well respected experts in the world. Unlike other guides, it is written in easily accessible language, and does not have an undue emphasis on mnemonic functions subserved by the medial temporal lobe (nothwithstanding the incredible importance of Alzheimer's disease in this area). This guide is a joy to read, and will also be of use to other health professionals.

Dr Shibley Rahman, Researcher in Alzheimer's Disease and Frontotemporal Dementias
