By Mr. Laurence Williams TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Blu-ray
I'm a big fan of all Coen brothers films except the rather pointless and ineffective 'The Ladykillers'. This collection is a little odd as it does not cover a specific sequence of their films nor genre (some are drama, some are farce, some a mixture !), but if pushed I suppose you could say it does collate 5 of their 'strange' films - albeit it is incomplete in that sense as others such as 'O Brother Where Art Thou ?' are absent. Having said that, it is a worthwhile acquisition for the films it contains - especially as it is currently the only way to get hold of 'Barton Fink' on Blu-ray.....

I was only able to compare 4 of the discs to DVD as I already have 'A Serious Man' on Blu-ray. My review of it is on Amazon - here's the link (or get to it easier by going via my Amazon profile); it is dated 23 Nov 11 :

A Serious Man [Blu-ray][Region Free]

As to the others, not all really 'justify' an upgrade to HD picture/sound but nonetheless are (as expected) an improvement. 'Barton Fink' gains significantly, being much sharper/brighter (probably because it is the oldest film) but it shares a similarity to 'Intolerable Cruelty' in that there are no extras whatsoever, not even the short featurette/trailer or deleted scenes that are present on the DVDs...

I've added a photo of the back of the box, which details the specification of each disc, to the main Amazon page for this Blu-ray boxset.

Happily, the standard Blu-rays of the remaining 3 movies ('The Big Lebowski', 'Burn After Reading' and ''A Serious Man') do contain extras; to avoid any confusion, they are the standard retail discs devoid of their respective Blu-ray boxes. This means you get a massive improvement in all respects for 'The Big Lebowski' (and deservedly so as this is the star of this compilation), the HD extras improvement for 'Burn After Reading' and the same glorious transfer for 'A Serious Man'.

Nothing else is in the box, so no booklet or collectibles - just 5 discs in an unusual packaging which does tend to mean the box 'jams' shut or open since the inner disc-holding 'leaves' can flop about and tangle up; plus the box outer is non-standard and requires a bit of effort to achieve closure 'success'.

So, a good way to delve into the world of the Coen brothers and the only way to see 'Barton Fink' on Blu-ray (at the time of writing my tip is to shop around, the price for this collection varies wildly...). What we need now is a supplemental collection including other gems such as ''Miller's Crossing', 'The Hudsucker Proxy' (not yet available on Blu-ray), 'Fargo' and 'The Man Who Wasn't There', with the latter being a film that should really benefit from an HD transfer.....

OK, so let's get one absolute masterpiece, one cult classic and one very, very good film, which, in no way, have NO BUSINESS rubbing shoulders with stinkers INTOLERABLE CRUELTY and BURN AFTER READING!!!!!

Of course, these films are- 1. Barton Fink- Perhaps my personal favourite Cohen brothers film to date (and along with Blood Simple and No Country- their darkest, and the closest they've ever got to making a complex horror film). Then The Big Labowski, one of the coolest, most enjoyable cult classics of the 90s (and one of their best comedies), and then A Serious Man, the Cohen's most personal film to date, that has the trademarks of the Cohen's best work- a great little puzzle of a film with moments of flat out genius and odd moments and an ending which is purely symbolic and leaves the viewer scratching their heads for a great deal of time as to how it ties in and what it actually all MEANS.

If you replaced the two stinkers with Miller's Crossing and Blood Simple (and perhaps A Serious Man, as good as it is, with the excellent return to form of No Country, or either Fargo, the film that gained all the oscars and made them huge, despite the fact I find it a tad overrated), and boy, this would be a box set to cherish. A work of genius by two of the most visionary and creative auteurs since the 80s, in terms of using their own ability to slap their own trademark, make something so deep, layered and thought provoking, with borderline mainstream sensibilities since their fantastic and highly atmospheric debut in the 80s.

But, in my opinion? I honestly don't see the point in purchasing the box set, as brilliant as the three films are, that have two totally irrelevant and throwaway Cohen films that shows them at their WORST, when their best (with Barton Fink giving a brief glimpse of them at their absolute best) is nowhere to be seen (and there's a whole bunch of them out there to explore).

Not to mention, this is currently the ONLY way to get of hold of the brilliant brilliant brilliant Barton Fink

DISAPPOINTED!!!

I have heard people rave about the Coen brothers for years and having watched No Country for Old Men and Fargo previously and really disliked both, I decided I'd keep trying with the movies in this box set.

In short, I regretted it. I honestly can't understand why the Coen brothers have such a cult following. I find all of their movies conceited, they all seem to work on the basis that they're a little bit odd, a little bit off the wall and people seem to believe that if you don't "Get it" it's because you're not smart enough or cool enough to understand the subtext.

Personally, I find they're all very dull with unfulfilling endings. I feel like so much time is spent trying to give an edgy or dark feel to the story that they forget to actually have a plot sometime and you end up with something akin to a character study of someone's life (A Serious Man for example).

After watching each one I've felt like I've been robbed of valuable time I could have spent on something else. I've no doubt that these films appeal to many people. I'm just not sure why! I would suggest that anyone like me who wants to see what the hype is all about watches one movie before investing in a box set like this. The truth is that if you don't like one, you're probably not going to like any of the others either. It seems the rule is you either "get it" and love them or like me you simply hate them.....
