OK, so let's get one absolute masterpiece, one cult classic and one very, very good film, which, in no way, have NO BUSINESS rubbing shoulders with stinkers INTOLERABLE CRUELTY and BURN AFTER READING!!!!!
Of course, these films are- 1. Barton Fink- Perhaps my personal favourite Cohen brothers film to date (and along with Blood Simple and No Country- their darkest, and the closest they've ever got to making a complex horror film). Then The Big Labowski, one of the coolest, most enjoyable cult classics of the 90s (and one of their best comedies), and then A Serious Man, the Cohen's most personal film to date, that has the trademarks of the Cohen's best work- a great little puzzle of a film with moments of flat out genius and odd moments and an ending which is purely symbolic and leaves the viewer scratching their heads for a great deal of time as to how it ties in and what it actually all MEANS.
If you replaced the two stinkers with Miller's Crossing and Blood Simple (and perhaps A Serious Man, as good as it is, with the excellent return to form of No Country, or either Fargo, the film that gained all the oscars and made them huge, despite the fact I find it a tad overrated), and boy, this would be a box set to cherish. A work of genius by two of the most visionary and creative auteurs since the 80s, in terms of using their own ability to slap their own trademark, make something so deep, layered and thought provoking, with borderline mainstream sensibilities since their fantastic and highly atmospheric debut in the 80s.
But, in my opinion? I honestly don't see the point in purchasing the box set, as brilliant as the three films are, that have two totally irrelevant and throwaway Cohen films that shows them at their WORST, when their best (with Barton Fink giving a brief glimpse of them at their absolute best) is nowhere to be seen (and there's a whole bunch of them out there to explore).
Not to mention, this is currently the ONLY way to get of hold of the brilliant brilliant brilliant Barton Fink
DISAPPOINTED!!!
