I found this book in the local medical school library when I got my diagnosis of celiac disease, back in 1995, and made xerox copies of several chapters that I am unable to find now that two relatives have developed symptoms. I can't find anything newer out there in book form that offers as much information useful to celiacs, so I was delighted to find second-hand copies available through Amazon. It is surprisingly readable for a medical monograph and includes much more discussion of the effects of celiac disease on the body (neurological effects, associated conditions, etc.) than the authors' more recent Fast Facts: Celiac disease, which is intended to help doctors diagnose celiace disease and therefore emphasizes diagnosis and treatment.
I know it's old (published in 1984) but I still find the book interesting reading - and if I want to investigate anything further, there's always PubMed to bring me up to date on current research. I'm not a doctor - just a curious celiac who's moved to an area where local doctors in my area seem to lack the knowlege of celiac disease now common in large urban areas.
