Amazon.co.uk Review

Based over 23 real-time tracks including Silverstone and Hockenheim ring TOCA World Touring Cars follows on from the ever popular TOCA series, but like every sequel the balance between getting it right or wrong is a thin line to drive down. Keep it too much like before and you get gamers complaining that your developers are being lazy. Change it too much and the cries of damaging the format and style we all love are abundant.

What Codemasters have managed to do is take a little bit from the past and a little from the future and created a game for the PlayStation that is worthy title for the send off of the console in its present format.

With Championship, Free Race, Time Trial and Quick Race, this game has everything you would come to expect from a racing game, yet it is the way in which this are executed that brings TOCA out from all the rest.

Graphically TOCA is one of the best racing games on the PlayStation. Imagine, if you will Gran Turismo 2, times that by ten and your starting to get there. Couple this with 14 cars simultaneously on the track racing with you at any one time and you start to get the picture of how involved this game is.

Also very strong is the gameplay, with nice little features that will keep you clued in the months to come. The better you do, the more bonus cars you can earn with the game eventually offering a whopping 40 vehicles ranging from a Daimler Chrysler to the Lotus Elise which you can crash to smithereens for TOCA world Touring Cars includes damage detail.

Codemasters have managed to produce a game that is a great send off to the PlayStation, one of those driving/racing games that in years gone by we will fondly look back and say "Ahh!" to. --Stuart Miles

Firstly, let me just say that I play PS2, so to me this game is no longer a top contender with graphics etc, so to help you people who still have a PS1, i'll write from how i liked it before I got a PS2:

The first thing that hit's you when you come onto the game is the graphics, there brilliant. There's a large selection of touring cars from Volvo to Ford and a number of special cars to unlock ranging from Peugot to TVR Speed 12's. The driving, especially the computer is very agressive. There's plenty of bumping and shoving, in real touring car style between even the computer team. Another good thing about the AI (Computer/Artificial Intelligence) is that they crash on there own, that just add's to the realism. There's plenty of tracks to choose from from locations all around the world. The views are good,(inside view especially realistic) and the championship is great. Racing on it is great fun and it did brung me hours of happyness.

Best Racer Yet! 24 Nov 2000
This is the best driving game that I have played on the PSX so far. Although it lacks the sexy car options of GT2, it's a damn site easier to get started with TOCA and you can't buy yourself out of trouble a la Gran Turisimo. All it needs is a 'qualifying' option to be perfect!

Ever since the launch of the Playstation, there have been countless racing games. Lots of these have simply been mediocre, or even poor, but there have been classics. The game which pretty much redefined the racing genre was Gran Turismo, which was followed-up early this year with the sequel, GT2. Personally speaking, I think both GT games are excellent, and certainly wasn't expecting anything to top GT2, especially not so soon anyway. It's a close-run contest, and I've played both games to death, but at the end of the day I'd have to say that TOCA world touring cars is the better game. Quite simply - it's hard to fault the game. The cars' handle superbly. There are 23 real racing tracks, including many Formula 1 (past & present) circuits. In each race you'll be fighting against 11-13 other cars, as opposed to GT's 5. The CPU cars have realistic AI and are highly aggressive, and often make mistakes themselves. Real-time damage - bumpers hang loose then fall off, bonnets crumple and windows smash. Then there's the game's structure - take part in the brilliant career mode, where you're asked to meet your teams criteria. And forget about a linear championship - pick which of the national touring cars championships you want to enter, and then work your way up to eventually take part in the World touring car season. In single race mode - or even the custom championship - you can alter different parameters like the number of laps, and whether it's day, night, sunny or raining. Ideally, if you're a racing game fan, you'll have both this and Gran Turismo 1&2, but I can honestly say I've had more fun playing this excellent game. Well done to Codemasters!.

Nearly but not quite!
TOCA World Touring Cars is a lot of fun and will be a major hit....but it definitely isn't a match for GT or GT2 which remain the ultimate serious racing games for adults.
