Product Description

Product Description

Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis is the ultimate realistic war experience where everything happens for real. Its conflict setting draws the player into the action so deeply because it is such a believable military environment. For the first time in such a game, the player controls and commands not just soldiers of all levels and squads but also land, sea and air vehicles--both military and civilian--from cars, to APCs, to tanks and even military helicopters.

The scenario is modern warfare: It's 1985, in the midst of the Cold War, and Gorbachev has been elected to power bringing with him policies of glasnost and perestroika. However, resistance Soviet groups are opposed to the new wave and are refusing to serve the new regime in Moscow.

One group has taken control of an island community, and is using it as an armed stronghold for the old order. NATO has been called to act as the peacekeeping force. Operation Flashpoint opens with the player joining the first mission against the Soviets.

It's a game of complete freedom with military crisis situations to handle on your own initiative. Once past the mission briefing stage, it's the player's decision how the overall mission or campaign is tackled. This variety also allows players to dip in and out of all kinds of action gameplay from commanding a squad, driving rumbling vehicles, and piloting a helicopter to being a sniper.

Again, incredible detail unfolds in each role: A NATO sniper makes use of the US-standard M21 sniper rifle with its correct optical markings. However, if they relieve an immobilised Soviet sniper of his rifle, they will be faced with Soviet-standard optical markings through the sights--and they do work differently.

The open environment of the game is massive and you can go anywhere at anytime; you're not limited to playing in mission-specific "walled" areas.

On Xbox, the game comes complete with an additional campaign titled Operation Flashpoint: Resistance, set years before Operation Flashpoint's Cold War hit crisis point.

4.0 out of 5 stars Flashpoint Elite - very good effort., 31 Mar 2006
Ok, many people have played the PC version (which I love) and the XBox conversion is a pretty good effort. The control system using the XBox controller is never going to be as fluid as a mouse and keyboard, but you get used to it - just give it time and practise.
Many peolple who like FPS shooters complain that this is boring, crap etc but they miss the point. OFP never was like other arcade-ish FPS rehashed clones of each other. It takes more effort but has more depth and rewards much more in the end.
The graphics are adequate, no more, no less but do not detract from the gameplay. The audio effects are quite good but improved considerably if you hook up to an AV amp or decent HiFI system.
Overall I am very impressed by this game after being disappointed by other FPS and 'war' games. If you feel the same, try this little gem. It requires more thought, tactics and effort but ultimately gives a more satisfying experience for the armchair commandos out there.
Finally sorry for the long winded review but the game deserves a good mention. Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Operation Flashpoint Cold War Crisis XBOX, 5 Nov 2005

When I bought this game last week, I had my doubts. For a start there was not much publicity and the price tag was low.

Well all i can say this is the best game I have bought this year. Forget about the major releases from a certain big boy (Who lets face sells the same games every year, with the intention of being user friendly too your grandmother)

This is what wargaming is all about, I actually went into Mission editor first. Set my mission up and oh boy when I got shot or attacked in my tank, it felt real and quite life like.

This game calls for tactics and care for your squad, there is so much in this game you will be learning all the time.

Yes it will not be for everyone tastes, but if you want a game with tactics, real war situations and a game that makes you think. Then this is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Xbox game?, 18 Jan 2006
I looked forward to this games' release since first reading about it 18 months beforehand. I had never played the PC version so did not know what to expect.
At first I was a little dissapointed with the graphics. The movement of your soldier as he walks/runs etc. left a lot to be desired. I played it offline for a while and took some time to master the controls and command menu, they are not COMPLICATED, but there is a lot to learn.
If you like to run around shooting stuff whilst being shot half a dozen times without consequence, you WILL NOT like this game. It is about as close to real combat as you can get. you can start on foot at one end of a huge island (which would take 45 mins to walk across!), jump into a jeep, drive to the airfield, climb into a helicopter with a friend, kill some tanks, eject back onto the battlefield, pick up any number of different weapons and continue the fight in woods, desert, mountains, towns.....
The playability is only limited by your imagination, you can create your own multi or single player games. As for the graphics... when you get over the small things, the graphics are great, from sunsets to weather changes to working dials on the many vehicles. Night time missions with battlefield explosions are simply awesome.
If you like a strategic game with adaptable AI then you need to buy this game.
