Amazon.co.uk Review

Morally ambiguous characters are all the rage in video games nowadays, but they always tend to be violent crime games. This is essentially a cross between the old Dungeon Keeper games and Nintendo’s Pikmin, where you play a Sauron-like dark lord in a fantasy world fill of so many corrupt and unpleasant people you often end up playing the de facto hero. Like Pikmin this is a mix of third person action game and a real-time strategy, the obvious difference being you’re now in charge of a horde of goblins instead of cute little flower creatures.

Although you directly control your bad self in the game you’ve only got some simple axe attacks and magic spells. Instead your main interaction with the world is via your goblin minions. You can either target an enemy and tell them to attack or control the biggest group directly with the right stick. One of the main currencies in the game then is lifeforce, with which you can instantly generate a new minion. This can be obtained from some enemies, and also sheep, but also from innocent villagers if you want to be really nasty. Although the game may lack moral complexities the capacity for strategy is more developed, as you eventually gain the ability to set ambushes and cast spells on minions. The game’s graphics are generally attractive, even with a jarringly short draw distance, but it’s the gameplay that really impresses here with something genuinely out of the ordinary in terms of both strategy and motivation.

Product Description

Discover how corruptible you are in Over lord, the twisted fantasy action adventure where you can be evil (or really evil). In the game`s seriously warped fantasy world, players will become the Overlord and get first-hand experience of how absolute power corrupts absolutely". You could be a regular run-of-the-mill Overlord. However, with incredible power at your disposal and a team of evil-minded impish critters, the Minions, on hand to do your bidding, how will you resist the temptation to be wonderfully despotic?!
The Overlord has the power of concentrated badness right from the start and you`ll know how much more of a total bad-ass you`re becoming as the game tracks your `corruption` throughout.

How corrupt you become depends on how you handle any given situation, your actions and how their consequences impact the game world. For example, if you and your minion horde dispose of a bunch of particularly nasty, violent Halflings that have overrun a once-peaceful village, the village`s original peasant occupants will herald you as their liberator. Now each time you pass through, the peasants will welcome you as their new lord and protector, cheering your arrival and giving you offerings.

However, as an Overlord, it`s worth seeing what more can be obtained from the peasants` gratitude. If you exert some proper feudal repression, they`ll tremble and fall to their knees when you`re in town. If you become truly mean, the poor peasants will resort to cowering in your presence, pray for their lives and even offer up their daughters in order to appease you.

Suprisingly good!!!!! 17 July 2007
Fun:
Now I brought this game on a whim...and it paid off!

I am so bored waiting for RE5 and was so let down with C&C3 that i just kinda closed my eyes spun around and picked the first game i saw and this was it.

Im not a fan of fable and all that but this game I just can not put down it is ever so addictive theres nothing quite like walking around getting all your little gremlin dudes (Minions) to do all the hard work whilst you just sit back and problem solve...you can tell a lot of time and effort went into this game although the camera angles kinda get on your nerves a bit...

I would recomend this game to everyone and anyone the gameplay is so simple to pick up but at the same time not boring.

A sure fire 5 stars from me!

Fun:
first off i must say that i disagree with the two negative reviews below. Fable is one of my favourite games and i also enjoyed overlord. also the other reviewer who said this is the worst game he has ever played is clearly an idiot who hasn't played many games in his life (probably just this and gears of war and came to that conclusion by comparing the two).

so what did i enjoy about this game?
well the gameplay is refreshingly different from most other titles around. i like most third person action RPG's and this game has a fun twist of controlling your own small army.

Also the levels are nice and big and well designed. Some are pretty long too. The controls are suprisingly good given that your controlling yourself and your minions and i never found them to be frustrating. The graphics aren't jaw dropping but easily adequate. There are plenty of nice touches to the game such as seeing your tower being built and different areas becoming available as you advance. also you yourself become more powerful, learning new spells and getting new weapons etc.

i thought it was a shame that there wasn't more options for the moral alignment of your character and hopefully that will be in the sequel (assuming there will be one)

Fun:
It's good to find a game that's not too bloody or dark, yet maintains a sense of evil scheeming. Overlord is just this. It's just fun.

It's quite clearly poking fun at a certain Lord of the Rings. You as the Overlord are resurrected by your master minion and gently guided onto the path of evil. The story is simple, the 7 heros who killed you previously have fallen victim to the 7 deadly sins. It's up to you to sort them out and revive your evil domain.

The halflings have become gluttonous, and the humans are fed up with their greed. They need an Overlord to show them who is boss. So while you trash the Halfling's land and supplies, you're a hero to the peasants who want the Halflings dead. In this sense you can never be truly 'evil'. There's always someone who adores you, even if it is your minions.

Speaking of Minions, they are an absolute joy to manoeuvre. As has been said, they will do anything to ask of them, and return to you like little puppies. The minions are your fighting force in the game and for the most part you don't need to do an awful lot of fighting yourself. The only problem is it's quite hard to been absolutely specific on what you want the Minions to do. When faced with a Halfling attacking you, and a bunch of goodies to be destroyed, they do occasionally head for the goodies leaving you to take rocks in the face.

As well as this, the camera angles are also a bit iffy at times. Using the sweeping motion to control the minions which panning the camera isn't always easy. You'll maybe find that you straighten the camera angle out only to find that your minions have returned to your side after you hand placed them where you wanted them. Also, and for me most frustratingly, there are no maps of the lands. Some of the areas are maze-like and I did get frustrated trying to find my way about.

On the plus side, this game had a sense of humour and it genuinely fun to play. It'll keep you occupied, keep you playing and frequently make you smile..which is refreshing after playing blood games for so long. It's nice to be able to pick up something of a corrupt fantasy and be the baddie. Unfortunately the structure if Overlord means you can only be, in the words of a certain Austin Powers baddie, the 'diet-Coke of evil'.
