4.0 out of 5 stars It's an effort but practice pays 29 Nov 2009
Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I bought the bundle for the F1 2009 game rather than just the game on it's own (Formula 1 2009 (Wii)) because they were the same price and my boyfriend isn't as used to Wii controls as I am, and thought he could learn better with the wheel. Not entirely sure that theory worked out right as he's terrible at the game! Though, fortunately the game suggested he switch on the assisted brakes (because he went wide at almost every corner) and then we found assisted steering, which compensates a little for oversteering. I tried it with these options and it did get a little easier. Though taking it off the split screen multiplayer helped too- we've got a big TV but it's always going to be better on single player for seeing where you're going.

The steering takes a little time getting used to, and that's where the skill of the game is going to be, not in speed or braking. The tracks look top, we've been racing at Spa, Silverstone and the Abu Dhabi track and it's great- I can tell where I am, where I've seen F1 drivers go off- and I'm doing the same thing, which is great! The 'racing line' is a good feature, telling you where you should be on the track at any one time, it turns red when you should be braking too (you can turn this feature off). There's also options for weather, damage to the car, full penalties, level of computer opponents etc (I'm sticking to easy for the time being!). It has time trials for each lap with a ghost car you need to either keep up with or beat. I've not checked out all the features yet, but I reckon I'm going to spend alot of time finding them out, in the same way I'm going to attempt to find out what it is I'm unlocking when I unlock things...

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally 22 Nov 2009
By Craig Taylor VINE VOICE
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
There hasn't been a F1 game since 2006's F1 Championship Edition on the PS3 and what can I say, I think it has been worth the wait.

This is the first F1 game to be made by the brilliant Codemasters, and they haven't done a bad job. As soon as you load the game up it has some sort of 'old school' feel to it, similar to the F1 games of the late 90s with simple menus and similar music to what you found on the old PS1 system. The graphics are good enough for the Wii, but hopefully they'll be even better on the PS3 and Xbox when their version is released next year.

In this game you get the original 2009 driver line up, plus all the teams and the new tracks that have never featured in a F1 game. You can choose to play as a real driver through race weekends or a championship or as yourself in career mode.

Initially I was worried about the contol system, but there are so many options for you to choose from including the F1 style steering wheel which sees you control the car by simply turning the wheel or you can use the num chuck and remote or even a classic controller. The choice is yours.

The game is pretty much flawless. The main problem for me is the pit stops, in proper F1, a pit stop only lasts around 7 or 8 secs but in this game a simply pit stop can last anywhere between 14 and 20 seconds. This is something you have no control over. Another thing I don't like is the fact that there isn't any comentary which can make races seem long and boring, fair enough you do get a race engineer, but it just isn't the same. Damage to the cars is also poor, along with a lack of spectacular computer racing.

It'l certainly do for now, but I hope codemasters will heavily improve this game for future releases. It is worth a buy even if it is just for the fun multiplayer spilt screen, something I wish more games had

4.0 out of 5 stars F1 2009 Wii - Great Effort from Codies! 24 Nov 2009
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I've followed the development of F1 2009 for some time and even though I was put off for a time due to the Beta videos/screenshots I was impressed enough by recent updated video footage to buy this shortly after release....and was glad I did!
Codemasters have done a fantastic job considering this is their first true F1 title (Toca RD3 had F1 championships in it but this was only a small part of a mutli-car class racing game) and they have delivered. True there are some rough edges here and there such as the odd slow down (especially on split screen), the lack of tv style commetary, basic damage model and lack of mid-season driver changes (odd considering the game was released after the season had finished - I want to race as Krazy Kobayashi damn you! :D) but this doesn't detract from the package as a whole.
The control system is great, I have only used the Wii wheel mode so far so can't compare to the remote/nunchuck, classic controller or Logitech wheel methods but it is great fun once you get used to it. Treating it like Mario Kart will stick you into every barrier you can see so you have to be gentle and use slight steering movements and with enough practice you can become an armchair Lewis Hamilton though after several hours i'm still more like Jaime Alguersuari! The KERS system is well implemented though every car has it and not just the select few as per the real 2009 season though this does keep the cars balanced rather than a few teams having the advantage over others.

Goes well with the Logic 3 Steering wheel. Beats all the other F1 games for the Wii. Great fun for the would-be racing driver.
