3.0 out of 5 stars beautiful to look at, but, erm... 4 Jan 2011
Format:DVD
Yes yes this is really lovely to look at, which is fair enough given Chanel and her sense of style, and the fact that Stravinsky who, to be extremely generous was rather plain, is played by a gorgeous hunk of an actor. It all passes before your eyes with great solemnity and exquisite taste... and yet you're left thinking "what actually happened?" -he edits "Rite of Spring", she invents Chanel No 5 and they have sex in a rather dark and creaky but beautifully decorated house. His poor sickly wife and family are stoic because Stravinsky's a genius and there's a nice swing in the garden. And that's it.
This underplays the magnitude of Stravinsky's achievement (you just sit at the piano, have sex with a beautiful woman and get cross at dinner and -da-da! the most important music of the 20th Century!) and doesn't really give much insight into Chanel either. Passed a not unpleasant hour or so but if its art you're after buy the Stravinsky CD box set (the bargain of the century) and a small bottle of Chanel no 5 (less of a bargain but still very nice)

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 5 Sep 2011
By Barney
Format:DVD
I am a fan of Chanel biography - film and books. Fascinating woman. Not sure i would have liked her, but I admire much and cringe at some. This film served only to prove Coco's selfishness - which if you have read or viewed other material you will already be familiar with. It also shows her "generosity" - financially - in supporting the arts. But at what cost to others. Anyhow, enough of her character. The film did not enlighten me at all about Stravinsky. It was all rather dull. I felt pretty dis-satisfied in fact. "Coco before Chanel" - now that's a film worth watching....get that one rather than this.

Igor and Coco follows the supposed affair between Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky, at a time when Coco was developing her Chanel no.5. The whole thing is very opulent, with a great use of light and shadow, with many moments with little light in them, along with great costuming and overall presentation. The problem is the main charcters are on the whole rather cold, so its difficult to really feel anything, except perhaps some sympathy for Stravinsky's shy wife and their children. It is a good movie, but I'm not sure what the point was if there is any to it - but it just might be proposing that Chanel was the equal of Stravinsky creatively and if this is the case its not entirely convincingly put.

My first observation is that there are trailers that are unskippable. Is it any wonder people look for pirate copies of films when you are rewarded when buying something by having... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
This disappointed me. Having seen the first film I expected this to be at least as good. I struggled to stay enthused for the duration.

1.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
Very disappointing. Maybe my expectations were just too high, but neither the script nor the actors were impressing or captivating. Partly beautiful but oh so boring.

3.0 out of 5 stars a romance and music
Perhaps some people will feel my rating is a little harsh. The music is good and the story is OK, although I found it tried to be a little too "arty" at times. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars bored
This is a very "arty" film, but it took a long time to tell a fairly short part of their histories. Was very disappointed with it.
