Product Description

Product Description

Jeff Turner's story is one of bravado, triumph, tears, betrayal and despair. From having the world in his hands at 15 to staring down a barrel at 17 and going from being a star of television to queuing at the job centre in two years. Together with his brother Mickey, Jeff Turner stormed the music scene. The Cockney Rejects' attitude was the real deal. They stood for being young, working class and not taking nonsense from anyone. But the madness couldn't last forever. As violence at their gigs spiralled out of control, so did the band. Jeff was left dazed and penniless. This is his own story.

A good read 11 Jan 2011
By Gogol TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
The history of one of the great underrated bands of the punk era put together with a little help from Gary Bushell (A man who I certainly wouldnt call a man of the people and anyone who lived through the 80s would confirm that one) The book is frank and to the point. The ups and the many downs of the band are well documented in this book from the riot in Birmingham to the near riot in Liverpool. The punk groupies (The girl who went through the entire band in Grimsby) To them nearly giving Ozzie a heart attack. Quite amazing to read how old they were though! They were literally just kids.

The thing which does start to grate the nerves after a bit is the "Cheeky cockney rhyme slang" Through the book which is milked to the point you think that character from Mary Poppins wrote it.

Other than that, good read.

On the face of it, the ideal crossover book between two publishing mainstays - the rock 'n' roll memoir and the terrace aggro book. You wonder how many mainstream readers know who Turner is but some sections - the riot/gig chapter in particular - are frankly chilling. It's a good read but it feels more like Gary Bushell's book than Turner's. .

Unflinching account of Jeff 'Stinky' Turners' life so far. Lots of highs: record deals, Top Of The Pops at fifteen years old (twice), touring the length & breadth of the country with your mates etc. and plenty of lows. Despite the attentions of the National Front at their gigs , various arrests & more violence than you could shake a stick at (after reading this he's probably the last person you'd want to shake a stick at!!) Mr Turner emerges as one of lifes' proper survivors .
Occasionally you think 'settle down & stop clocking people' but it's also inspiring in that he never gives up & does it on his own terms. Anyone who grew-up in the early 80's will find a lot to love in this book.
How many books can boast contributions from Morrissey (foreward) & ghost-writing from Garry Bushell?!

Cockney Reject-Fantastic
A great book and a good honest insight to what it WAS like at the time. A fantastic band early on with a sound so raw, it would bite your ears! Real london music for real people. Read more

The whole truth and nothing but the truth.
How can I emphasise how good this book is without appearing as a die-hard Rejects fan? Well I am not, or at least, I was not. Read more
