A bewitching and brilliant book from someone who clearly knows his subject in enormous depth and is able to communicate both his vision and passion. Anyone who has travelled in Peru in the seventies and eighties will be simply amazed at the discoveries that have been made SINCE then about these ancient cultures. Wonderfully easy to read.

Hugh Thomson's book Cochineal Red gives readers a terrific picture of Peru, past and present. His easy-read style takes you straight to the heart of the many and various ancient civilisations, that have risen and fallen in that part of the world over thousands of years. His simple explanations give readers a clear picture of these ancient people through the facts found in archaeological sites. We witness the revelations, as he had during his many expeditions, and the expeditions of other explorers and scientists. I felt I was there with him, experiencing the amazement of discovering new facts from the past, during his travels. This continues in Peru, even today. I realise, we know so little, and finding out is the modern explorer's role. A role Hugh Thomson fills wonderfully.
