Mary McKie writes about her time living at Felbrig Hall in Norfolk, a National Trust property, where her husband spent 3 years as a Houseman.

She shows how the hall is very much alive all year round and how much work there is to do to keep the house preserved and in a suitable condition for visitors. Through the pages you will live with them and experience the many visits, frustrations and expectations that members of the trust and other visitors have of our historic houses.

In parts funny and in others very informative, one even feels frustrated on their behalf in some circumstances. A Wonderful book. If you read this you'll read "Dry Rot and Daffodils" immediately. A book you can't put down.

I enjoy visiting National Trust properties, but didn't get chance to visit Felbrigg Hall whilst on holiday in Norfolk this year. Mary Mackie has written three memoirs set at Felbrigg Hall, where she lived and worked for several years.
This book Cobwebs and Cream Teas follows the author and her husband Chris, who took a job as Houseman at Felbrigg Hall. It covers each season over a year and the tasks and daily challenges that they faced.
I was slightly disappointed with the book. It started out alright, but after a while I found the same continual tone of the writing style difficult to remain fully engaged with. A National Trust property sounds like an interesting place to work and live in, and this couple worked very hard at tackling jobs that had needed doing for a long time. I get the impression that the work is more interesting for the person doing it than the person reading about it.
Overall, not as good as I'd hoped for, but then again my expectations were probably set a bit high. I was really pleased to discover a book set in a NT place and took it for granted that I would really enjoy it.

I was born only 3 miles from Felbrigg Hall, the National Trust property where this book is set. I have also voluntered for the National Trust, so I know the amount of work that is needed to upkeep properties and grounds. This book provides a fascinating insight into the work untaken by only a handful of people to maintain an old house, full of precious artifacts - whilst at the same time coping with hundreds of visitors every week, some of whom are extremely selfish and ignorant. I just wish Mary had written more books on the subject.
