Book Description

Killed by blows over the head with a champagne bottle, the body of the disreputable heir to a great fortune is unexpectedly found within ancestral walls. The entire countryside appears to be implicated. But suspicion falls more strongly upon a certain farmer, once deeply wronged by the murdered man. When the farmer himself is killed there seems to be no way out, until JS Fletcher’s crafty hand finally brings the tangle into logical unravelling.
A riveting mystery filled with hatred and revenge.

J.S. Fletcher is, in my view a much neglected crime writer. His stories bustle along and he entertains us well with good style, the almost before we realise it, it is over and we are left saying "what who where". We have just been pushed over the cliff top ending. As if Fletcher was bored and could not bother with a well rounded ending!

But we always return in spite of this fault.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cobweb Castle - J. S. Fletcher at his best. 8 Jun. 2014

I enjoy the works of J.S. Fletcher, only discovering him about a year ago (through an Amazon recommendation) and am steadily reading through his extensive output. They are intelligent, well written stories and Cobweb Castle is no exception - with a spooky empty castle, stolen treasure, murder and the family solicitor, his clerk and the police trying to unravel the mystery.
Characters are well drawn and distinctive - I always find this adds to the enjoyment when the author gives me a good mental image of each of the cast of characters.
I appreciate that Fletcher's work may not appeal to all tastes as it has a dated quality (set in the late 19th and into the early 20th centuries), but this, for me, adds to it charm.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging read 28 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I buy all J S Fletcher's novels set in the early 20th century. I can be sure I am getting value for money and he has never let me down. Fletcher's characters are always engaging and his plots intricate. The hero is usually an engaging young man, often of the legal profession whom the police seem eager to take into their confidence. I find this very satisfying. Sometimes the young man finds the girl of his dreams and sometimes not, as in this book. I have still a few of Fletcher's books tucked into my Kindle yet to read. Oh Joy!

The discovery of J S Fletcher, of whom I had previously never heard, has opened up a source of excellent, light, crime novels of the 1920s. Really pleased
