Of course, films like this should be viewed in the context of their time, and from the viewpoint of their original audience. The fantasy world of Cobra Woman in which twin sisters, good and bad, vie for control of a tropical island complete with a rumbling volcano (Fire Mountain is angry is a line oft repeated) is also one where in the space of 68 minutes good triumphs resoundingly over evil with the main characters looking forward to a life of unparalled bliss.
Universal studios specialized in the "B" movies, horror and musicals mainly, which kept cinemas busy throughout the war years, but for the Maria Montez starring vehicles they invested considerably. The Technicolor photography is very good, lush and brilliant - just what was needed in a drab war torn world. We probably can't imagine at all the impact Technicolor must have had on wartime audiences, whose daily routine was only punctuated by visits to the movies where films like Cobra Woman represented a real escape from daily anxieties and troubles.
Don't look for art, hidden meanings, or any great depth - just enjoy Cobra Woman on its own terms and you'll have another fun afternoon's viewing. Everything about Cobra Woman is attractive - the stars, Maria's gloriously over the top wardrobe. Sabu contributes an appealing performance too as the Jon Hall's "pal"!
Recommended without reservation. The DVD print is as close to perfect as you could get, and an amusing extra is the original thatrical trailer.
The film is a general Universal jungle drama masquerading as a pseudo horror, with its Universal Horroresque title, and Lon Chaney (Jr, that is) is given his usual special "and" billing in the credits - sadly he is not given any mention on the front or back of the DVD cover desite being the most recognisable name in the cast. On the whole good value for money lovely transfer, and a fairly enjoyable romp.
In it's favor, the print is gorgeous. Sharp image and beautiful colour.... but the dvd has no extras.
