5.0 out of 5 stars A riveting story of loyalty and humour. 22 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
This is a heart-warming novel of humour and sadness intertwined. Susan, Jimmy and baby William were orphaned in 1941 when a bomb killed their Mother and father. The two eldest went to live with their Auntie Dorothy who was married to their father's brother Tommy who was also away fighting in the war. William went to stay temporarily in a children's home where they visited him in the beginning but after a while when Dorothy was stressed about her Tommy and making ends meet she told the two children that William was dead.

As the war years went by with Susan and Jimmy living with their Aunt Dorothy until late Summer of 1941. They were playing with friends and a fight broke out and in trying to defend his sister Jimmy whacked the ruffian with a cricket bat causing his nose to bleed and a tooth to be dislodged. The second whack caused him to fall to the ground in an unconscious state. Jimmy thought that he had killed him so with Susan and ten shillings rent money he ran away!

They meet a Service man Freddy, who befriends them and takes them to an old cottage during the night the two children hear a noise and find a dead German and parachute. The German has three valuable jewels. They wake Freddy and he decides that they can keep one each but impresses upon the children that they are valuable and they have to keep them a secret till after the War..An action packed book well worth reading.
