For a long time, the Jack Brymer recording of Saxo-Rhaposdy was the top choice but this one is now the current favourite. Kenneth Edge is an unknown to me but his playing here is fantastic. It makes an interesting comparison and shows that he is far more fluid than Brymer and plays with wonderful precision and lyricism - is this perhaps because Brymer was mainly a clarinettist? It is true to say that in both of these recordings, the emotion conveyed by the orchestra doesnt match the original Rashcer recording but that one has too many recording flaws and even misses out some sections (to fit the piece on a 78rpm disc?). I should also add that the rest of the program is a delight too and this cd is really quite a bargain!
