Product Description

From the Inside Flap

Britain’s oldest retriever breed, the Curly Coated Retriever also bears the distinction of being a most unique gundog. Prized for its mass of crisp, small curls all over its black or liver coloured body, the Curly, as his name so aptly describes, can outswim, outrun and outclass any of the sporting, hunting breeds. The devoted lot of Curly fanciers know the secrets that this smart, active retriever offers; its confidence, independence, sense of humour and fun, and its uncompromising work ethic. Additionally, as a family companion and best friend, the Curly Coated Retriever rivals its more popular retriever brethren in personality and loyalty. This book provides much-needed up-to-date information about the Curly Coated Retriever and its fascinating but muddy origins, breed character and standard, as well as puppy selection, feeding, basic obedience, proper puppy precautions, house-training and preventative health care. In addition to its authoritative, lively!
text, this book presents over 135 photographs in full colour, which prove to be as informative as they are attractive. Helpful hints and important information are highlighted to provide easy access to everything the reader needs to know about life with a Curly. Whether it’s basic training, skin care or allergies, this book is the way to prevention, providing the reader with the necessary guidance an owner needs from puppyhood through the senior years. Recommended by top breeders and trainers, this book is the responsible first choice of every new owner of a Curly Coated Retriever. Topics discussed include: History of the Curly Coated Retriever; Characteristics of the Curly Coated Retriever; The Curly Coated Retriever Breed Standard; Everyday care of your Curly Coated Retriever; Training your Curly Coated Retriever; Health care of your Curly Coated Retriever; Your senior Curly Coated Retriever; Behaviour of your Curly Coated Retriever.

The Curly Coated Retriever is considered the most unique of all of the retriever breeds. With his sturdy legs and body covered in a mass of tight, shiny curls, he appears more to be a cuddly teddy bear than a capable and courageous hunting dog. He is also the least recognised of the retrievers and is often mistaken for the Poodle or the Irish Water Spaniel, his distant relatives of centuries ago. Although the Curly is a most popular gundog in New Zealand and Australia, where he is prized for his strength, courage and tenacity, the breed is not well known in countries like the United States or other parts of the world.

An attractively illustrated book with plenty of useful information. There are lots of good tips for the novice to this unusual breed of dog, but with facts to interest the enthusiast as well. This is an excellent portrait of an old breed of English Gundog accompanied by a practical all-round dog care guide. In short, the book will be an investment for the new puppy owner, but as the proud owner of two magnificent "curlies", I can vouch that it is a worthy read.

On page 13 the Curly is described as a long lived, active dog. Compared to other large dog breeds, the Curly might better be described as a high-energy, short-lived dog. Eight to twelve years, and often less than eight, is not so long lived in my opinion.

In the section "The Curly in Australia and New Zealand", when referring to the Murray River Curly, the author confuses Australia and New Zealand (page 15). This Australasian reader then became suspicious of the finer detail in the remainder of the book.

Overall the book comes across like a formula book which gets adapted by different authors for different breeds, or perhaps an adaptation of a book about a different breed.

The homeopathic remedies section (pages 134-136) does not lend the Health Care chapter much credibility.

The photographs are good, especially of this predominantly black creature whose coat color makes photography a challenge under many lighting conditions.
