Review

What a daunting task Chris Jesty had in updating what for many are the ultimate walkers' bibles, the Pictorial Guides. But he's risen to the task and I actually look forward to each seamless revision and leave my old, rather weather-beaten originals where they now belong - the shelf of my bookcase, away from the grandkids' hands. Jesty has, as usual, done a wholly sympathetic job in bringing AW's work into the twenty-first century. (Cumbria )

This new print will have even more trekkers lacing up their boots to follow what is now a well-worn path. (Evergreen )

Product Description

This is the first fully revised and updated edition of A. Wainwright's pocket-sized guide to the Coast to Coast Walk which he devised in the early 1970s. Over the years this 190-mile walk - from St Bees Head on the Irish Sea by way of the Lake District, the Pennines, Swaledale and the North York Moors, ending at Robin Hood's Bay on the North Sea - has become one of the best-loved long-distance routes in the world. It has prompted countless enthusiasts to lace up their walking boots and follow Wainwright's example, and inspired a TV series too. This brand new edition of the Pictorial Guide contains Wainwright's hand-drawn route maps and his inimitable commentary, completely revised where necessary by Chris Jesty. The route is picked out in red for greater visibility on the page, and every step of the walk has been checked and updated.

A classic update 24 Aug 2010
Format:Hardcover
Back in the 70's my best mate and I set off from St Bee's Head full of the joys of spring.

It was however, October and for the first two full days it rained and rained and our already overstuffed packs got heavier and heavier.

By the time we packed up a sodden tent and contemplated the slog out of Borrowdale, we'd had enough, squelched aboard the bus to Keswick, changed out of our wet gear in the bus station loos (yeeuuch!) and caught the next bus home.

Buying Chris Jesty's excellent update of my Wainwright original brought it all back!

I can't wait to have another go. This time though, in deference to my increasing decrepitude, I'll travel light and stay in b&bs.

If you're planning to tackle the Coast to Coast, then this wonderfully entertaining book, nicely enhanced by showing the route in colour, is the only guide you need.

An excellent update to the original and told in the usual Wainwight style of lovely pen and ink drawings, the attention to detail. It continuesd to be a great guide.

For the walk i completed on 21 May 2011 I also used OS maps and Henry Steadman Trailblazer Coast to Coast Path not only to navigate but to refer to, to enjoy the route as i went along. It was not a walk to be rushed and completed by route march ... but to be enjoyed!

It doesn't really give notes on planning and booking accommodation, but the setting up is half of the fun of the whole experience and doing the walk.

The memory of this walk will stay with me for the rest of my life and using this book and others mentioned, I will be able to relive it and bring it all back to life from time to time.
